“Where the Rain Holds Your Name”

Alessandra Graziella Di'Stefano

“It’s a strange kind of sorrow

how the ones we love the most

become ghosts long before they ever leave.”

Some nights, when the rain leans heavy against the glass,

I swear the world remembers me better than he ever did.

The window fogs, the streetlamps blur,

and there

right where the warmth of my breath meets the cold

a message appears.

Remember me.

Not as the girl who stayed too long in the wrong silence,

but as the woman who loved with a devotion

that could’ve lit whole cities

if anyone had bothered to notice.

The rain knows.

It always has.

It keeps my secrets better than any lover

dripping down the glass like the tears

I never let fall in daylight.

People think heartbreak is loud.

Tragic.

Dramatic.

But the truth?

It’s quiet.

It’s a hand against a windowpane at midnight,

waiting for a shape in the fog that never forms.

It’s whispering your name into a room

that no longer echoes it back.

It’s writing Remember Me

with a fingertip that trembles

because it already knows

no one will read it.

But still

I write it.

Because somewhere,

in some unseen corner of the night,

I want to believe someone feels the shift,

the tug,

the soft ache that says:

You mattered here.

You were loved here.

You are not forgotten.

And if no one remembers?

The rain will.

It always returns.

Always comes back to the window

where I leave the last fragile pieces of my longing

not to beg,

but to be honest.

Because sometimes the only way to survive

is to admit you’re still hoping

someone out there,

even for a heartbeat,

wishes you had stayed.

For every soul who has ever loved in silence and waited for a whisper that never came.

... Read moreThis poem beautifully captures the silent sorrow that accompanies heartbreak, revealing emotions that are often unspoken and unseen. The imagery of rain and window panes serves as a powerful metaphor for memories that linger and the quiet pain of loving without reciprocation. Such poetic reflections remind us that grief and loss are not always loud or dramatic; often, they unfold in moments of solitude and introspection. Many who have loved deeply understand the struggle of feeling forgotten or unnoticed in the vastness of the world. This poem validates those feelings by acknowledging that even if others do not remember our contributions or our love, there is a natural world—the rain, the fog, the night—that witnesses and preserves our stories. For those navigating silence after heartbreak, acknowledging the pain quietly held within can be a vital step toward healing. Just like the rain that consistently returns, these feelings may ebb and flow but do not vanish entirely. The poem encourages embracing hope, even a fragile one, that our love and loss matter—if only to ourselves or to some unseen presence. In moments of reflection, it’s important to recognize the strength found in vulnerability. Writing and expressing emotions, even when unacknowledged by others, can be an act of survival and self-care. This speaks to the universal human experience: wanting to be remembered and loved while grappling with the reality that not all affections are returned or celebrated. Ultimately, ‘Where the Rain Holds Your Name’ serves as a tribute to silent love, persistent hope, and the enduring marks left by those we cherish. It encourages readers to hold space for their own quiet heartbreaks and understand that in doing so, they remain connected to their own humanity and capacity for love.

What’s the opposite of magic?
There was a time when sickness meant you were possessed by a demon. We called in priests, performed rituals, and prayed to the right gods. A fever was always a fever but we called it magic before germs were discovered. The experience of being sick has not changed but our understanding of it has.
