Easy Healthy Homemade Nutella
This easy, healthier homemade Nutella uses dates for natural sweetness and takes only about 15 minutes to make.
Ingredients:
• Raw hazelnuts
• Pitted dates
• Cacao powder
• Vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions:
If your hazelnuts still have their skins, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and roast them for about 10 minutes, until the skins start to brown and loosen. Let them cool slightly, then rub them to remove the skins.
Blend the hazelnuts until you get a smooth, buttery consistency.
Meanwhile, soak your dates in warm water for a few minutes to soften them, then drain.
Add the soaked dates, cacao powder, vanilla extract, and about 1/4 cup of water (or plant milk) to the blender. Blend everything together until smooth and creamy.
For a richer, silkier texture, you can add a teaspoon of oil (coconut oil works great).
And voilà ! Store in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 weeks.
Making your own Nutella at home not only allows you to control the ingredients but also ensures a fresher, preservative-free spread. Using dates as a natural sweetener is a fantastic way to avoid refined sugars while adding fiber and nutrients to the recipe. When sourcing your hazelnuts, consider buying them raw and organic for the best flavor and health benefits. Roasting is a key step in unlocking the nutty aroma and taste of hazelnuts. When roasting, keep an eye on the nuts to avoid burning and ensure even browning. Removing the skins is essential to avoid bitterness, and a simple kitchen towel or your fingers can help loosen them after roasting. For blending, a high-powered blender or food processor works best to achieve a creamy consistency without lumps. If you find your spread too thick, gradually adding plant milk such as almond or oat milk helps reach your preferred texture without adding excessive calories. Adding coconut oil is optional but recommended for a silkier spread that holds well at room temperature. You can also experiment with vanilla extract or a pinch of sea salt to enhance the overall flavor. Storage is simple: keep your homemade Nutella in an airtight jar in the fridge for up to 3-4 weeks. Always use a clean spoon to scoop it out to maintain freshness. Lastly, feel free to customize this recipe by adding other ingredients such as cinnamon, espresso powder for a mocha twist, or even a handful of protein powder for an energy boost. Homemade spreads like this are not only satisfying but also economical and free from unnecessary additives, making them a great staple in a healthier kitchen.
