... Read moreWow, June flew by, and what a reading month it was! I feel like I ventured through so many different genres, perfect for keeping things fresh and exciting, just like an ideal book club discussion. I primarily stuck to my Kindle – seriously, it’s been a game-changer for someone who’s always on the go. Plus, so many of my discoveries were available on Kindle Unlimited, which is a huge win for exploring new authors without breaking the bank!
Let's talk about some of the highlights, and maybe a few that didn't quite hit the mark. First up, GIRL, INTERRUPTED really stood out. This memoir about a woman's stay in a psych ward was surprisingly a perfect summer read for me, as it was so captivating and thought-provoking. It definitely sparks a lot of conversation about mental health, societal expectations, and personal journeys – exactly the kind of book you’d want to discuss with your book club. The raw honesty in Susanna Kaysen's writing resonated deeply, making it a powerful read that stays with you long after the last page.
Then there was IF YOU TELL by Gregg Olsen. For all my fellow true crime aficionados, this one is a highly recommended, deeply disturbing true story of murder, family secrets, and the unbreakable bond of sisterhood. It's not for the faint of heart, so definitely check trigger warnings, but if you're into investigative journalism and complex family dynamics, this will keep you absolutely glued to the pages. It's one of those books that leaves you pondering human nature and resilience for days.
On a much lighter, but equally impactful note, The Friend ZONE by Abby Jimenez was an absolute delight. Her writing just hits every time! It’s a romance, yes, but it deals with real-life issues and emotions, making the "relationship status: it's complicated" feel incredibly authentic. It's the kind of book that makes you laugh, cry, and cheer for the characters, and it’s a great palate cleanser after something heavy. It's a testament that romance can be deep and meaningful.
Now, for a couple that were a bit mixed. Liane Moriarty’s The Last Anniversary was an okay summer read, but honestly, it wasn't anything super special for me. It had its moments, but didn't quite have the usual Moriarty magic that I've come to love. And then there was THE HOUSEMAID by Freida McFadden. This one, unfortunately, just did not work for me. I often love a good psychological thriller, but this one I kind of hated. It just didn't click, which just goes to show that not every popular book is for everyone, right?
Overall, June was a month of great variety and personal discoveries. Whether diving into memoirs, chilling with true crime, or getting swept away by romance, there’s always something new to explore. What were your standout reads from June? I'd love to hear your raw and honest opinions – maybe we can find our next book club pick!
