Toddler DIY - Moon dough

Here is a toddler craft/activity that will keep your little entertained while making it and playing with it after! Ingredients are cheap and easily accessible.

Recipe:

1/2 cup of cornstarch

1/4 cup of conditioner

food coloring (optional)

Have your little mix this up, they will need help. Eventually you can knead it like dough to fully incorporate. I find the color mixes well into the conditioner so I do that first then add the corn starch.

This dough will eventually be more crumbly than play dough but is an interesting texture that is different and fun to play with!

... Read moreMoon dough is a popular sensory play material that offers a unique texture different from traditional play dough—it is crumbly yet moldable, providing toddlers with a fun tactile experience that aids their sensory and motor skill development. This DIY moon dough recipe uses household ingredients like cornstarch and hair conditioner, making it an economical and convenient craft activity for parents and caregivers. When making moon dough, the choice of conditioner can affect the dough’s moisture and scent. For example, conditioners like Suave Essentials Coconut Moisture can add a pleasant fragrance and help achieve the right consistency. Food coloring can be added to enhance visual appeal and engage children’s creativity; incorporating color into the conditioner before mixing with cornstarch allows for even distribution. Safety is paramount when crafting with toddlers. Ensure all ingredients used are non-toxic and safe if accidentally ingested, as young children often explore materials through taste. Adult supervision is necessary during mixing and play to prevent ingestion of excessive amounts. Besides being fun, engaging toddlers in making moon dough supports their cognitive development by encouraging following instructions and experimenting with measurements. It also promotes fine motor skills through kneading and molding. Once prepared, moon dough can be used with plastic molds, cookie cutters, or simply hands-on squeezing and shaping, enriching imaginative play. Storing moon dough in an airtight container will extend its usability. While it tends to dry out over time, adding a small amount of conditioner can help revive it. This versatile craft is suitable for rainy days, quiet time, or as a sensory tool in educational settings. In addition to moon dough, other DIY toddler sensory play materials include homemade slime, finger paints, and rice sensory bins, offering a variety of textures and experiences to keep little learners engaged and exploring the world.
