“The Lemon Tree Out Back” 🍋✨
Now listen—this ain’t no fairy tale with glass slippers and pumpkin carriages. This right here is a true-blue, soul-filled story about a girl named Tameka and a lemon tree that taught her about life.
Tameka grew up in her Grandma Nita’s house, a creaky little home with chipped paint and a whole lotta love. Out back was a lemon tree, big and bold like it had been there since the Garden of Eden. But baby, that tree didn’t give nothing. Not a blossom, not a bud, not a single lemon. Every year, Tameka would look at it sideways, like you gon’ do something or nah?
One hot summer when Tameka was about fifteen, she was going through it. Her hair wasn’t laying right, her friends were acting funny, and her dreams? Whew, they felt too big for her tiny little corner of the world. One day, after another rejection email from a writing contest she’d poured her whole heart into, she sat under that dry ol’ lemon tree and just cried.
Grandma Nita came out with her house shoes scraping across the porch and a mason jar of sweet tea in hand. She handed it to Tameka and said, “You know what that tree been doin’ all this time, baby?”
Tameka sniffed. “Nothin’.”
“No ma’am,” Grandma Nita said, plopping down beside her. “It’s been rootin’. Sometimes before the fruit shows up, the roots gotta get real deep. That tree been working underground, in the dark, in the dirt, preparing to carry somethin’ heavy.”
Tameka blinked. “So you sayin’… it’s still growin’, even when I can’t see it?”
“Exactly,” her grandma smiled, tapping her heart. “Just like you.”
Whew, child. That hit her in the spirit.
A year later, that tree bloomed outta nowhere—lemons everywhere, juicy and bright like little suns. And wouldn’t you know it, Tameka’s stories started blooming too. She won a contest. Then another. Then she got published in a magazine her mama used to read while gettin’ her hair pressed.
And every time she sipped her tea with fresh lemon slices, she remembered: just ’cause you don’t see the fruit don’t mean God ain’t workin’.
⸻
Moral of the story? Sis, don’t rush your process. Just like that lemon tree, your roots are diggin’ deep. You might be out here feelin’ unseen, but baby, you’re becoming. Stay grounded, keep prayin’, and trust—your season is coming.
“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” — Galatians 6:9 KJV 💛
