... Read moreFrom my experience using the Let’s Figure It Out Level 1 activity, it’s incredibly effective in helping children develop essential social skills through real-life problem-solving scenarios. Students engage with situations where they must decide if an issue is a big problem, a small problem, or not a problem at all. This classification task encourages critical thinking and flexible problem-solving, which are vital skills in navigating social interactions. The combination of Boom Cards and printable cards makes it versatile for multiple settings, including speech therapy sessions, special education classrooms, and teletherapy. I found that the digital Boom Cards are particularly useful for remote learning, keeping students engaged with interactive content, while printable cards are great for hands-on group activities. Additionally, this activity supports emotional awareness by prompting children to consider the impact of different social situations on feelings. For example, a scenario where someone laughs at another can be perceived differently depending on context, and discussing this through the activity fosters empathy and understanding. Incorporating this activity into social skills groups or SEL lessons has improved students’ ability to regulate their responses and develop behavior support strategies. It’s especially beneficial for children with autism spectrum disorders who often need explicit instruction in recognizing problem severity and appropriate responses. Overall, Let’s Figure It Out enhances flexible thinking, a cornerstone for social competence, by guiding children to assess situations thoughtfully rather than reacting impulsively. This approach aligns well with contemporary therapeutic practices emphasizing emotional regulation and problem-solving skills.
