First day on a dementia floor

So last night I completed my first 3-11 shift on a locked dementia unit at the nursing home I started at.

As an RCA I assist CNAs with their tasks as well as monitor the hallway to ensure resident safety and make sure our wanderers arent in other residents rooms or belongings. “Stealing” among dementia patients is super common.

👍Pros:

Night shift is a whole vibe.

Most of our residents go to bed really early.

Job requirements are very easy.

Extremely rewarding work.

🤔Cons:

Current CNAs are not friendly is any sense of the word.

Dementia is a heartbreaking and unpredictable disease.

... Read moreWorking in a dementia care unit can be both challenging and rewarding. Patients with dementia often face significant memory loss and behavioral changes, which require caregivers to adapt their methods to ensure safety and comfort. Effective communication is crucial, as well as understanding the unique needs of each resident. The experience can lead to strong emotional connections with the patients, despite the difficulties presented by the disease. Night shifts provide a quieter environment, allowing caregivers to focus on rediscovering patients through activities like music therapy and reminiscing. This not only helps in calming anxious patients but also promotes engagement and reduces feelings of isolation. Additionally, maintaining a safe environment is paramount in dementia care. Staff must constantly monitor for wandering and potential issues stemming from confusion. Collaborating with other caregivers, like CNAs, enhances team support and improves the overall quality of care. Whether you are considering a career in caregiving or are already in the field, the experiences shared in communities online can provide valuable insights and strategies for overcoming common challenges.
