Find the good in the chaos ##dementiadisruptor

3/1 Edited to

... Read moreCaring for someone with dementia is truly one of the most challenging roles anyone can undertake. From my own experience and from listening to countless caregivers, it's incredibly easy to feel overwhelmed by the daily chaos dementia can bring. Behaviors such as resistance to care, mood swings, and confusion create a stressful environment that tests your patience and resolve. What I've found helpful is shifting focus toward gratitude, even in the smallest moments. For example, if your loved one allows you to assist with a simple task like brushing their hair or eating a meal without distress, that can be celebrated as a meaningful win. Caregiving is often described as thankless, but choosing to recognize positive interactions—even brief ones—can replenish your emotional reserves. Staying mindful of the fact that these difficult behaviors stem from the disease rather than the person helps maintain compassion. At times when it feels like nothing is going right, remind yourself that surviving the day and managing to keep calm is itself an achievement. Keep a small journal or notes where you jot down any moment of calm, cooperation, or joy you observe. Over time, this shapes a more hopeful perspective. Additionally, reaching out for support—whether through online communities, support groups, or professional counseling—can provide practical advice and emotional validation. Knowing you’re not alone in this journey can make a big difference. Remember, this role is not one you signed up for, but your love and dedication are powerful forces that truly impact your loved one's quality of life. Keep finding those "little bits" of good amidst the chaos, and let gratitude be your anchor as you navigate each day.
