Being considered high risk often means more frequent screenings and a few extra steps, but it’s incredibly important for early detection and peace of mind. A mammogram involves compressing the breast tissue to take clear X-ray images. Although the sensation of being 'squeezed' might sound intimidating, most describe it as a brief discomfort rather than pain—often less bothersome than everyday nuisances like paper cuts or stubbed toes. The entire procedure takes just a few minutes; at the clinic, you might hear instructions such as “no deodorant allowed,” as certain substances can interfere with the imaging. Typically, the mammogram involves two scans per breast, performed one at a time. Images are taken from different angles, and you might feel your breast being gently flattened ('pancaked') to capture the best detail. Lockers are usually available for your belongings, making the visit convenient and secure. In addition to mammograms, especially for those with higher risks, doctors may recommend supplemental imaging like breast MRI to get a deeper look. While MRI may sound intimidating, it’s another valuable tool for monitoring breast health. If the idea of these screenings makes you anxious, it’s helpful to ask questions beforehand.
