Billion ACCT-A-208161 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Billion must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER, FOSTER or ADOPTER by FRIDAY, DECEMBER 20TH at 10AM. Should Billion’s medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.

Meet Billion, a boy worth a billion bucks! Billion is an excited and high energy boy, who is looking for an adventure partner for life! Billion ended up at the shelter on December 1st when his owners experienced a family emergency and could no longer care for him. He previously lived with another dog in the home and will gladly meet any resident dogs ahead of an adoption! During a meet at the shelter, he seemed interested in the other dog, but was frustrated that he was on leash when interacting with them. Billion is a high energy dog who is looking for an active home that can give him the exercise and enrichment he needs to thrive. He enjoys fetch and is very treat motivated. Because of his exuberance, Billion would do best in a home with no young children. Due to his length of stay, Billion is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner, foster, or adopter.

BEHAVIOR:

Day trip Notes 12/15: Billion is 100% big puppy energy. He hopped right into the backseat of my car for our trip to the Wissahickon, and was wagging his tail and sniffing out the window for the whole drive. By the time we got to the park he was literally grunting with excitement, and could barely contain himself. He appears housebroken, as he peed immediately when he got outside (he also scooted right up to a tree trunk and pooped on it? Never seen that before but it was very funny). On the way into the park, we ran into another ACCT volunteer out for a day trip, and although we kept our distance, Billion was clearly excited to see a potential friend. He is a moderate/strong puller on the leash, but does respond (at least temporarily) to verbal reminders, and will double back for treats without fail, so can likely be trained out of this. He was well behaved on the hike, although he did jump up to say hi to one jogger who passed us. No barking or growling or anything aggressive or mouthy, just a friendly jump, but it’s important to use body positioning with him until he’s a little better trained with manners, because he is a powerful pup. He also did great when another passing hiker with a dog, using perhaps the longest leash in Philadelphia, had poor control over their dog and it pulled and barked at Billion. He was interested in the surprise visitor, but didn’t respond with any growls, barks, or anything other than a pull of the leash. We hiked for about an hour and a half, and he showed no signs of slowing down, so he seems like he will be an excellent adventure buddy, especially once his leash skills improve. On the way back, he hopped just as easily into the back of my Jeep, and was very sweet on the ride back, sticking his head between the seat and the window and giving thank you kisses. Billion is ready for an active, loving home, and he deserves nothing less.

Per staff 12/15: Billion was already out when I did the dog meet with him. I took him from the other handler and he was very excited, pulling slightly on leash. The first dog we met was very stiff through the fence. Billion let out a playful (slightly frustrated) bark and the other dog reacted by growling. We brought out a different dog and he was very interested, which was a bit overwhelming. He became frustrated again, but seems like he could do well with a dog who is high energy and wants to interact with him. I had no issues returning him to kennel.

Per volunteer 12/15: Ball chaser!

Per volunteer 12/13: Billion is so much fun! I was laughing the whole time having him out. He's so silly! Such a happy boy. He really likes toys, plays fetch extremely well. Is house broken and crate trained! He is ready for a new home where he can continue to be his silly goofy happy handsome self!

Per volunteer 12/13: Billion is a very excited boy!! When I approached his kennel he was barking and jumping up on the door with a wiggly body. He pulls moderately on leash. Super energetic boy!! He loves running around and goes wild after any toys including squeakies and tennis balls. Doesn’t seem to guard toys and good at fetching! Seems treat motivated. Jumpy excited boy! He seems like he’d do great with an active owner.

Per volunteer 12/12: Good boy, digs everything.

Per volunteer 12/10: Strong, very pulley towards other dogs, loves treats, playful, a little jumpy when excited.

KENNEL PRESENTATION:

When approaching Billion in kennel he was up on the bars alert barking and the handler showed the leash. His eyes softened and he quieted down and got very wiggly. He was doing toe taps, spinning in circles and was eager to come out. For leashing he tried to push out and was very excitable and aroused. He would dodge the leash and bark a lot and try to push out so it took several tries to get him leashed and once leashed he exited eagerly.

In the room Billion was very wiggly and excitable. He ran around playing and would dart back over to us jumping up for attention, doing toe taps, and spinning in circles out of excitement. He allowed all over handling and would lean against us while being pet and continue to be very wiggly and loose. He took treats gently and showed knowledge of sit!

Per staff 12/1: Came into dog intake really stressed and overworked, Billion seemed to have some trouble breathing and was dry coughing. Eyes were super red and he was panting aggressively. When taking him to the exam room he did vomit a little. Informed management and staff took him to kennels to give him some time.

Per staff 12/1: Dog seemed to be very bonded with other dog Karma. Allowed handling but did hard bark at staff. staff believe it was possible reaction to leash or other dog Karma.

Per his owner surrender notes, they had Billion for 3 years and he lived in a home with adults and another dog. He is a very energetic and playful dog who doesn’t like to be isolated and can be stubborn when left alone. He is fully housetrained and crate trained and knows basic commands, but does pull on leash. He is playful with strangers and children, is intrigued by other dogs and wants to small them, and does not like cats. They noted he may have allergies.

MEDICAL:

On 12/4, Billion was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (URI) or "doggy cold" and started on medication. He tested negative for pneumovirus.

During his intake exam on 12/1, his eyes, ears, and nose were clean, but his eyes and ears were super red. His teeth had some staining and he had some hair loss on his tail and butt, but no fleas were visible. Due to his stress, he did not receive his vaccines upon intake, but received them the next day once he settled in.
