... Read moreFrom my personal experience supporting individuals with autism, I've noticed that sensory processing issues are often misunderstood but deeply impactful. Conditions like hyperacusis make everyday sounds painfully loud, which can trigger stress or meltdowns. For example, common noises such as fire alarms, dogs barking, or loud music can be overwhelming and even physically painful. In addition to sound sensitivities, fine motor skills are often a challenge. Activities that build core and hand strength—like climbing, swinging, or using utensils—are essential for development but may require patience and targeted strategies. I've found that integrating play activities like tree climbing or swinging on monkey bars not only helps improve coordination but also builds confidence. Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), which frequently co-occurs with autism and ADHD, highlights how complex neurological processing can be. Individuals may be over- or under-sensitive to touch, movement, and sound, making social and academic settings difficult. Understanding this has helped me approach interactions with more empathy and customize learning environments to reduce overstimulation. While SPD is not officially recognized in the DSM, therapies like Sensory Integration Therapy have been valuable in managing symptoms. Recognizing signs such as difficulty sensing hunger or the need for bathroom breaks also plays a crucial role in daily care. Ultimately, raising awareness about these overlapping conditions and their effects on daily life is key. Families and educators benefit from resources that explain sensory sensitivities and motor challenges, helping create supportive environments that promote growth, independence, and well-being.

Living with both ADHD & autism

Why ADHD and autism diagnoses matter
I thought I was autistic for a year or so before I was formally diagnosed. And as far as ADHD goes, I was pretty sure I had it for several years before I was evaluated. So, imagine my lack of surprise when I was dual evaluated for both and it was determined that I am indeed AuDHD. But something

Autism and being unpopular
