Autism accommodations that aren’t all tangible

There are a lot of physical accommodations that I use, things like earplugs, headphones, fidgets, and more. But there are also accommodations that are more concepts than items. And for me, these can be just as important.

and for the record - my morning coffee and nightly wind down routine might be the same every day, but all other bets are off (thanks ADHD 😅)

How do you accommodate your autism?

... Read moreAccommodating autism can often go beyond physical items like headphones or fidgets; it includes essential routine-based practices that promote emotional stability and well-being. One effective accommodation mentioned in discussions is maintaining a structured daily routine. For instance, keeping certain routines consistent, like morning coffee rituals, can provide a sense of normalcy and comfort, especially for those who experience anxiety or sensory overload. It’s crucial to recognize the role of consistent meal patterns as well. Many autistic individuals may find solace in routine meals, as unpredictable food choices can intensify sensory stress. Acknowledging that it’s okay to prefer familiar foods, whether it's a frozen meal during overwhelming days or enjoying gourmet dishes on calm ones, showcases self-acceptance and care. Moreover, engaging with others who can share tips on non-tangible accommodations enriches the community experience. Platforms such as forums and support groups can connect neurodivergent individuals to share their unique strategies, insights, and advice. Emphasizing the importance of mental health from a neurodiverse perspective can bolster understanding and acceptance within broader communities.

I can relate to the foods one. I love to buy some frozen foods. I’ll get some cereal, tuna creations. I also would cook salmon tacos, homemade pizza with vegan cheese, frozen turkey burgers, and salmon pesto pasta.

The foods one is relatable; I’m a big fan of frozen chicken strips, rice, and/or basic tacos as samefoods but I also have canned ravioli or spaghetti-os, cereal, and a few other things that are touchier and depend on how I feel.
