Mediumship, knowing your boundaries

Mediumship, knowing your boundaries with mental health and the spirit realm.

By Amanda Wright-Tabone Article 2024

Tonight I was talking with Andrea who is an incredibly gifted medium and long time veteran in the paranormal and spiritual field, who Bill and I highly respect. We were both discussing cold cases and our methods with our respective research with ITC communications and our own gifts as mediums. Andrea asked me a question that really resonated with me, she said “Amanda how do you cope with what comes through to you with spirit, and how does this affect you and your mental health as a medium?”

I said to her this is a very important question and I said I’m going to write about this when I’m off the phone as it’s important to share with others who do similar work in the field. Taboo subjects are my favourite.

We as Mediums take on the weight of both worlds being the physical and the spiritual. We as mediums also need copious amounts of energy to work and connect with spirit which requires us to be in good health mentally, physically and spiritually. We see and feel things that are connected to many realms of existence including our earthly existence and experience.

Our work with spirit especially cold cases are quite heinous in nature and we absorb part of spirits last moments on the earth realm. We deeply feel spirits trauma, we see what they have suffered before their deaths and also after they have crossed (or not crossed over but earth bound). This can be an extreme weight for us as mediums to work through and to experience this is actually really big stuff to process. As I told Andrea when I was nursing I had to sometimes put on my invisible cap so not to absorb all the pain and death, family grief and family greed I’ve seen so many times in my years as a nurse. I had to leave what I experienced each shift at the steps of the hospital, otherwise my work as a nurse would have literally taken my soul and consumed me whole. These are the same ramifications we bare as mediums. We have to learn to feel it but then leave it in our spirit room or it will consume us, same as Empaths and other gifted souls.

These events affect us as mediums in profound ways, it changes us which affects our entire psyche as human beings. Andrea and I have always been very open with our dialogue and I told Andrea that sometimes I can’t even step into my spirit room, that I suffer from depression sometimes “quite severely”. I’m not ashamed to share this with the world. It’s apart of me and that’s apart of my gift and my apart of my entire being as a human. I am flawed and I recognise that and I acknowledge it then deal with it.

I have experienced spirit my entire life. I had no one to nurture my gift which isolated me and I learnt to depend on myself as I couldn’t share my gift without ridicule, meeting likeminded people along the way “occasionally”. This taught me unhealthy feelings about myself and unhealthy coping mechanisms which I internalised. It took me years to accept my gift and accept that I am gifted and it’s ok to be different. I am different. I suffer depression.

If I’m not well (depressed) then I don’t step foot into my spirit room. Depression can bring on lower entities and can cause attachments. I’m extremely well versed in my depression and my knowledge in the field. I know when to take a step back from my sessions with spirit and when I am well enough to work again. I can have extremely high or lows with my depression which I’ve suffered most of my life. This sadly is an ongoing struggle and I deal with it, I accept it because it’s me, Amanda, flawed and all.

Taking on the emotion of spirit as well as what life throws my way is an enormous responsibility. Not only do we as mediums take on the emotions and care of those who we help in the spirit realm we take on our own personal life dilemmas. In other words mediums double-dip life and death and the ramifications from this life to the next that’s big stuff.

So knowing myself and when life is heavy is self care. Which is important for mediums to recognise. Remember: There is no shame in mental health and recognising you need to take a step back.

We are after all only human and for only a very a very short time in this thing we call life.
