SNOW ❄️ in NOLA 🤔

It's hard to believe, isn't it? Just when you think you've seen it all in New Orleans, the weather throws a curveball! Like many of us, my first reaction to hearing about snow in NOLA was pure skepticism. We just don't get snow here, or at least, not the kind that sticks around. I've lived here my whole life, and I can count on one hand the number of times I've actually seen flakes fall, let alone accumulate! It's been years since we've had anything more than a dusting, so the idea of a significant snowfall seems almost legendary. But this time, it feels different. The weather predictions are serious. We're talking about a Severe Weather Winter Storm Warning, an Extreme Cold Warning, and a Severe Weather Advisory all rolled into one. The forecast I saw even mentioned snowy conditions around 9 PM with a 45% chance of snow, and a 10-day forecast indicating a 70% chance of snow today and a whopping 95% on Tuesday! And get this—temperatures are expected to drop to 28°F! That's practically unheard of for us, even in the depths of winter. This immediately brings up the question that's on everyone's mind: how often does it snow in New Orleans? The short answer is, almost never! Historically, measurable snow in New Orleans is an anomaly. We might get a few flurries every few years, but real accumulation? That's a once-in-a-decade or even less frequent event. The last time we had anything truly notable was quite a while ago, enough that many people have probably never experienced it. Our subtropical climate and proximity to the Gulf of Mexico usually keep us well above freezing, even in winter. Now, about the other big question: could we really see a foot of snow? While the current warnings indicate a significant event and high probability of snow, a foot of snow in New Orleans would be an absolutely unprecedented scenario. Our infrastructure and even our collective memory aren't really prepared for that! However, a "Severe Winter Storm Warning" does imply more than just a dusting. It means we could see several inches of accumulation, enough to cause disruptions, close roads, and certainly make for some incredible photos. It's not about a foot, but about a potentially impactful amount that we're simply not accustomed to. Given these warnings and the rare possibility of actual accumulation and extreme cold, it's crucial for us New Orleanians to prepare. We're not used to this! Here are a few things I'm doing and recommending: Protect Your Pipes: This is huge! Uninsulated pipes can burst in freezing temperatures. Let your faucets drip slowly, especially those on exterior walls, to prevent pipes from freezing. If you have outdoor pipes, cover them with insulation or towels. Check on Neighbors: Our community spirit shines brightest in times like these. Check on elderly neighbors or those who might need assistance getting supplies or staying warm. Pet Safety: Bring pets indoors! If they must be outside, ensure they have warm, dry shelter, food, and unfrozen water. Stay Warm: Layer up! Dig out those scarves, gloves, and hats you rarely use. Make sure your heating system is working, and have extra blankets handy. If you lose power, know where your emergency kit is. Driving Precautions: If we do get accumulation, roads will be slick and dangerous. Most of us don't have experience driving in snow or ice, so avoid driving if possible. If you must, drive slowly and cautiously. Stock Up: Grab some extra groceries, especially non-perishables, just in case you're stuck at home for a day or two. Don't forget essentials like medicine. This is truly a historic weather event for New Orleans, whether we get a foot of snow or just a few inches. It's a reminder of how quickly things can change, and how important it is to be prepared.
