nighttime wellness habits

2024/12/21 Edited to

... Read moreI used to dread bedtime, not because I didn't want to sleep, but because my mind would race with everything I hadn't done or needed to do. It felt impossible to truly *unwind*. That's when I realized I needed a proper nighttime wellness routine, not just a haphazard attempt to fall asleep. It’s been a game-changer, and I want to share how diving deeper into a few key habits has truly transformed my nights and mornings. One of the biggest hurdles for me was the screen time. I mean, who isn't guilty of endless scrolling right before bed? Setting a strict 'phone curfew' has been revolutionary. Initially, it felt like I was missing out, but replacing that scrolling with reading has been incredible. Whether it's a fiction novel or a personal growth book, getting lost in pages helps my brain shift gears from active to receptive. This also gave me time to practice another valuable habit: writing down three things I'm letting go of before the next day. It’s like a mental decluttering session, releasing worries and anxieties that would otherwise keep me tossing and turning. Then there’s the whole sensory experience. I’ve become a huge fan of creating a calming ambiance. My all-time favorite ritual now involves a cozy herbal tea. Chamomile is my go-to, but peppermint or a calming blend works wonders. It’s not just about the tea itself, but the act of mindfully preparing it, watching the steam, and savoring each sip. Coupled with a lavender pillow spray, my bedroom transforms into a sanctuary. The scent immediately signals to my brain that it’s time to relax and prepare for sleep. I’ve found that consistency with these small, sensory cues really helps to program my body for rest. Another habit that has significantly reduced my evening stress is writing tomorrow's to-do list. I used to lie in bed, mentally rehearsing all the tasks for the next day, which only heightened my anxiety. Now, I dedicate 10 minutes before my wind-down period to jot everything down. This simple act clears my mind, assuring me that nothing will be forgotten and allowing me to truly switch off. It frees up my mental space, so instead of overthinking, I can actually focus on winding down. Finally, I’ve incorporated gentle physical release. After a long day, my body often holds a lot of tension. A quick 5-minute stretch or some light yoga movements, often followed by progressive muscle relaxation, makes a world of difference. It's amazing how consciously tensing and then releasing each muscle group, from my toes all the way up to my forehead, helps me become acutely aware of my body and lets go of any lingering physical stress. Sometimes, I even try a short guided body scan meditation if my mind is particularly busy. It helps anchor me in the present moment. Building a nighttime wellness routine isn't about perfection; it's about consistency and finding what works for *you*. By dimming the lights in my home about 30 minutes before bed and reflecting on one positive thing from my day, I end on a gratitude note, which somehow makes my sleep even sweeter. I encourage you to pick one or two habits from this list or the original article and try them out. You might be surprised at how much better you sleep and how much smoother your mornings become!
