if you’re anxious about starting therapy...

the first therapy session is nothing to get too anxious about! it’s just an intake of your general symptoms and how you’ve been functioning. expect to be mostly answering questions, rather than doing any deep diving into what you came to therapy for.

the 2nd session is usually when that starts. It was during that session that I started telling my therapist about my grief, trauma, and other stressors I came here to work on. she cared about allowing me to take things at my own pace and start wherever I needed to, which is what should ideally happen so you feel most comfortable!

... Read moreStarting therapy can be a daunting experience, especially when anxiety creeps in. Many people feel uncertain about their first therapy session, wondering what will happen and if they will be judged. It’s essential to understand that the first session primarily serves as an intake session, where you'll receive questions regarding your general mental health and any symptoms you've been experiencing. This process helps the therapist understand your situation, fostering a safe environment to begin your journey. In subsequent sessions, deep diving into personal challenges, such as grief, trauma, or other stressors, typically occurs as you build trust with your therapist. This gradual approach is crucial; therapists are trained to ensure you feel comfortable discussing any topic at a pace that feels right for you. Engaging openly with your therapist can lead to more significant breakthroughs in your mental health journey. If you’re feeling particularly anxious, consider jotting down questions or concerns you might want to address during your sessions. Take comfort in knowing that it's perfectly normal to feel nervous before starting therapy. Many clients share similar sentiments, and therapists are experienced in helping clients navigate these emotions. Creating an open channel of communication with your therapist can also ease anxiety, allowing the therapeutic process to unfold naturally. Overall, starting therapy is a personal journey, and everyone's experience is unique. Embrace the process and remember that you are not alone in your feelings. Taking the first step is always challenging, but with each session, you’re investing in a healthier, happier you.
