what dissociation might look like

the "easiest" way to describe dissociation is "zoning out," but that doesn't do it justice. it really feels like a freeze state, and sometimes you don't realize you're in it until you get pulled out of it. it almost feels like your brain is hijacked.

it comes on out of no where and takes control of your perception of reality. Things feel foggy, almost like a film is placed between you and your surroundings. Now that I know what it looks like, I try my best to catch it and ask myself what I need to do to pull myself out of it (to the best of my ability). Sometimes it's grounding exercises, and sometimes it's affirmations like "I am here. I am real. I am safe."

... Read moreDissociation can manifest in various ways, often leaving individuals feeling detached from reality. When experiencing dissociation, you may feel as though you are observing yourself from a distance, almost like being in a separate reality. This phenomenon can strike during intense emotional stress, and it often goes unnoticed until you find yourself in a complete 'autopilot' mode. Common signs include a foggy perception of your surroundings, feelings of unreality, or even not remembering what occurred during specific time frames. Grounding exercises can prove invaluable during such episodes; simple affirmations such as 'I am here. I am real. I am safe.' can help re-establish your connection to reality. Moreover, it’s crucial to recognize these signs early to mitigate the effects of dissociation. By learning to identify triggers and employing positive affirmations or contrasting sensations (like holding an ice cube), individuals can regain their sense of self and combat overwhelming feelings. Seeking professional help or engaging with supportive communities discussing mental health awareness can also be beneficial in understanding and managing dissociative experiences.

The image displays the question "POV: 'Why are so many of my childhood memories missing?'" in a typewriter font on a textured white background, addressing a common query about trauma.
The image explains that memory is stored in fragmented pieces (sights, sounds, feelings, sensations) and that trauma disrupts the brain's story-building, causing memories to be stored without a timeline.
The image defines dissociation as the mind checking out during overwhelming events, where the body records fragments but not the whole story, explaining why specific details are remembered over full events.
Chronic childhood trauma changes the brain in real, measurable ways. Toxic stress disrupts the hippocampus - the part of the brain that makes memories - which is why so many childhood experiences feel fragmented or missing. During overwhelming events, the brain prioritizes survival over story-b
