Reasons Why Our Relationship Has Lasted 7 Years

People sometimes ask what our “secret” is after 7 years, but honestly? There isn’t one. What’s kept us strong is the very un-glamorous stuff: choosing to show up again and again, even when it’s hard.

One of the biggest lessons was realizing that “love languages” shift over time. We’ve had to relearn how to support each other through different seasons, whether that’s handling stress, grief, health struggles, or burnout.

We also work on how we repair after fights. In the past, we’d avoid hard conversations out of fear of conflict. Now, we lean in even when it’s uncomfortable, because we know repair builds trust. Our relationship is strong because we keep choosing each other on the hard days, not just the easy ones.

In any long-term relationship, having a solid foundation and tools to manage challenges is crucial. Over the years, we have realized that love languages evolve, making it essential to engage in open communication about our needs. This can sometimes lead to discomfort but acknowledging each other’s feelings strengthens trust. We learned the hard way that addressing issues head-on rather than allowing resentment to build is key to maintaining harmony. During conflicts, we take time to cool down, ensuring that we actively listen rather than dismiss each other's concerns. Supporting each other’s growth, both individually and as a couple, plays a vital role in our relationship. When one partner thrives, the other often feels the impact, which can either nourish or strain the connection. We’ve faced significant hurdles, including long-distance challenges and personal setbacks, but committing to each other through thick and thin has been our most valuable lesson. Remember, it’s the persistent choice to support and love one another, even amidst chaos, that creates a lasting bond.
