Book series that I WILL NOT be continuing

I know that these books are well loved by many and “to each their own”, but these books were not the vibe for me. If you love them, then I’m happy for you!

The Ritual: I really didn’t like the characters. The FMC had the personality of a wet dish rag at best and the MMC was too unhinged. The misogyny in this book was also on another level. With the spicy books I read, I like the spice to be accompanied by some yearning, and this was all just lust. I’m also not a fan of scenes that blur the lines of consent to this degree. The FMC has some fantasies that are problematic imo and it was just uncomfy. Don’t get me wrong, I love a dark romance but it had to be done the right way. I have absolutely no desire to read anything more about The Lords after this.

Haunting Adeline: This is another example of a book that had too many blurred lines. There were several scenes (especially one with a gun, IYKYK) that just went too far for me. The MMC is VERY unhinged and I fully don’t understand his motivations for most of this book. How can he be killing criminals but somehow justify his stalking and treatment of Adeline? I just don’t get it. It ended in a cliffhanger but I would only pick up the second one so that I could hate on it which I think isn’t healthy for me right now🤣

How Does it Feel?: (‼️SPOILERS WITH THIS ONE‼️)I hate this book with a passion. It took over 50 pages for the book to actually start and it was so boring that I almost fell asleep. At one point, I thought that maybe I bought the wrong book because nothing was happening but I continued anyway. I was told it was good so I pushed through it hoping it would get better (spoiler; it didn’t). Then we started to learn more about the main characters, but they’re both very unlikeable. The FMC compared herself to Barbie at some point in the beginning which I found to be so stupid and it made me roll my eyes. She was just kinda shallow and boring imo. But the MMC is so much worse. The MMC is just an absolute jerk and has no redeeming qualities. The MMC’s feelings for the FMC switch up too quickly near the end as well and it feels like lazy writing to me. But the worse offense of all is the plot twist at the end. We spend the whole book listening to the FMC try to convince the MMC that she’s innocent and that she hasn’t been sent to kill him just to find out at the end that she LIED THE WHOLE TIME. She deliberately lied to the reader and at no point did I question her honesty. Then the twist comes from absolutely nowhere and I felt so blindsided. This makes her so much more unlikeable and it made me throw my book across the room. I’ve never been so frustrated when reading in my life. I know that the second book came out recently, but you couldn’t pay me to read it.

The Dragon’s Bride: I thought that I could read this since I loved Ice Planet Barbarians, but this felt too much like bea$tiality to me😬 I just couldn’t get behind this when the MMC is not very humanoid. It just grossed me out honestly and it’s a miracle that I was even able to finish it. This was my first true monster romance and I physically cannot read another one.

... Read moreIn the realm of contemporary romance, several works often attract both passionate fans and critical reviews. Books like 'The Ritual' and 'Haunting Adeline' have sparked considerable discussions surrounding their narratives and character portrayals. It's essential to remember that literature is subjective; what resonates with some may not appeal to others. 'The Ritual,' classified as dark romance, has been criticized for its portrayal of misogyny and consent issues. Readers often seek a deeper emotional connection in spicy scenes, something this book reportedly lacks. Similarly, 'Haunting Adeline' delves into controversial themes, leaving many baffled by character motivations. These narratives illustrate the blurred lines in modern romance, where intense plots can sometimes overshadow character development. Notably, 'How Does It Feel?' has faced backlash for its pacing and character likability, with many finding it difficult to relate to the protagonists. In contrast, 'The Dragon's Bride' pushes boundaries within the 'monster romance' genre, prompting varied responses from readers about its portrayal of intimacy. As the romance genre evolves, it invites diverse themes and motifs, eliciting multi-layered reactions. Emphasizing the importance of responsible storytelling in romance allows readers to engage with content that respects emotional and ethical boundaries.
