boricua or Puerto Rican isn't taino

# REAL HISTORY OF BORIKÉN (so people stop getting confused)

Before talking about “Boricua,” people need to know WHO came to the island and WHEN.

## 1. FIRST WAVE — ORTOIROID (THE OLDEST)

- 3000 BCE – 2000 BCE

- First humans in Borikén

- Hunters, fishers, gatherers

- Arrived thousands of years BEFORE the Taíno

## 2. SECOND WAVE — SALADOID (EARLY ARAWAK)

- 500 BCE

- Came from the Orinoco River (Venezuela)

- Brought pottery, farming, organized villages

- Taíno culture eventually evolved from these groups

## 3. THIRD WAVE — TAÍNO (LATE ARAWAK)

- Culture formed between 600 CE – 1200 CE

- Dominated Borikén until 1493

- Original name of the island: BORIKÉN

---

# WHO INVENTED “BORICUA”?

It was NOT created by the Taíno.

## BORIKÉN (Taíno)

- Before 1493

## BORINQUEN (Spanish changed the name)

- 1500s

## BORINQUEÑO (Spanish demonym)

- 1600s–1700s

## BORICUA (modern form created under Spanish rule)

- 1700s–1800s

- NOT a Taíno word

- Created inside the Spanish colonial system

## PUERTO RICO (official Spanish name)

- 1521

## PUERTO RICAN / PUERTORRIQUEÑO (modern identity)

- 1898 and forward

---

# QUICK SUMMARY SO NOBODY GETS LOST

Ortoiroid — 3000 BCE

Saladoid — 500 BCE

Taíno — 600–1200 CE

Borikén = Taíno

Borinquen = Spanish colonial

Borinqueño = Spanish colonial

Boricua = Modern identity (1700s–1800s)

Puerto Rico = Spanish name (1521)

Puerto Rican = Modern identity (1898+)

And BEFORE the Taíno, the island already had ancient peoples living there.

... Read moreHaving researched and learned about the waves of migration to Borikén, it's fascinating to see how the island's identity has evolved over thousands of years. The Ortoiroid people, who settled here around 3000 BCE, really set the foundation, living as hunters and gatherers long before agricultural societies appeared. Then, around 500 BCE, the Saladoid people brought new advancements like pottery and farming, greatly influencing the emergence of the Taíno culture between 600 and 1200 CE. One common misconception I encountered was the idea that "Boricua" is a Taíno word. However, historical linguistics clearly show that while the root "Borikén" is Taíno, "Boricua" as a term actually developed much later during Spanish colonial rule in the 1700s-1800s. It was part of how Spanish colonials adapted indigenous language to their phonetics and cultural context, turning "Borikén" into "Borinquen," then "Borinqueño," and eventually "Boricua." This evolution reflects the complex interplay between indigenous heritage and colonial influence. Moreover, the official Spanish name "Puerto Rico," established in 1521, and the identity term "Puerto Rican" that emerged post-1898, also demonstrate how nationality and cultural identity continued evolving after colonization. As someone who identifies with Puerto Rican culture, understanding these historical layers gives me a deeper appreciation of the island's rich past and helps clarify ongoing conversations about indigenous identity versus modern cultural terms. It reminds me to honor both the ancient peoples who first inhabited Borikén and the historical processes that shaped today's Puerto Rican identity. This layered identity is a beautiful testament to resilience and cultural blending across millennia.
