how (& why) i compost ♻️

composting has become one of my favorite low-waste habits 💚

i started small—with a cute lil countertop bin—and now i turn food scraps into natural fertilizer for my plants 🌱

it’s easier than you’d think: just collect your veggie scraps, mix in some dry browns like leaves or cardboard, and let nature do its thing.

it keeps food waste out of landfills and gives your plants a nutrient boost—win-win ✨

save this if you’ve been curious about composting but weren’t sure how to start ♻️

... Read moreComposting is an effective and environmentally friendly way to manage organic waste, reducing the amount sent to landfills and promoting a healthier garden. An ideal composting setup includes using a countertop bin made of sustainable materials such as bamboo fiber, which is odor-resistant and dishwasher-safe, making it perfect for indoor use. Biodegradable waste bags can also help keep the process tidy and efficient. The key to successful composting lies in maintaining a proper balance between "green" and "brown" materials. Green materials include vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, eggshells, tea leaves, and plant trimmings, which are rich in nitrogen. Brown materials, such as dry leaves, shredded paper, cardboard, and wood chips, provide carbon and help absorb moisture. A recommended compost ratio is approximately two parts brown to one part green materials. Chopping food scraps into smaller pieces accelerates decomposition by increasing the surface area for microorganisms to act upon. Regularly mixing or turning the compost pile introduces oxygen, further speeding up the breakdown process and preventing unpleasant odors. The composting process generally takes between two to four months, depending on factors like temperature, moisture levels, and how often the pile is turned. Warmer, moist conditions help microbes thrive and decompose waste faster, while cold or overly dry states slow down the process. You’ll know your compost is ready when it has a dark brown, crumbly texture that smells earthy rather than foul. At this stage, no large scraps should remain, and the material resembles rich, fluffy soil. This nutrient-dense compost can then be used as a free fertilizer to enrich your garden soil, improve plant health, and promote sustainable living. By composting, you contribute to reducing landfill waste, decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, and creating a circular waste system. It’s a practical, budget-friendly habit that benefits both your home garden and the planet.
