Weekend Recap - UH Orientation

School is around the corner ✨

New city. New school. New chapter.

It’s scary, it’s exciting, it’s my path, and in my own time. 🕰️

The first in my family to walk this journey 🥺 I hope I make them proud.

💭 I know it won’t be easy, but this is what growth looks like!

🌟Are you a first gen? Share some tips!

... Read moreStepping onto the University of Houston campus for orientation was surreal and exciting. As a first-gen student, every moment felt monumental, and while my initial post covers the emotional side, I wanted to dive deeper into the practicalities for anyone else heading to UH orientation, especially if you're like me and new to navigating college life. What to Expect at UH Orientation & Navigating the Schedule: The orientation schedule is designed to introduce you to everything you need to know. You'll likely attend various sessions covering academic advising, financial aid, campus safety, and student life. Don't be afraid to ask questions – write them down beforehand! During my orientation, I made sure to clarify details about course registration and all the student support services available. Pay close attention during the campus tour; it really helps you visualize where everything is. Walking through some of the main academic buildings, like seeing the impressive Master of Architecture building, gave me a real sense of the academic environment. It also helps to get a feel for the campus layout, which can feel huge at first! There are usually opportunities to meet future classmates and current students, so try to be open and mingle. Tips for First-Gen Students: This is a huge one for me! If you're a first-gen student like me, don't hesitate to seek out resources specifically designed for you. There are often mentorship programs and support groups that can provide invaluable guidance. Remember, you're not alone in this journey, and there’s a whole community ready to support you. Talk to advisors about scholarships, grants, and any financial aid questions – every bit helps! It’s okay not to know everything; the orientation is there to help you learn. Beyond the Formalities: My Weekend Adventures & What to Bring: While the official UH orientation schedule is packed, it’s also important to take some time to explore and make yourself comfortable. My weekend recap included more than just campus tours. I made sure to explore a cute breakfast spot, COSMO, which quickly became a favorite (their pancakes were amazing!). I even managed to squeeze in a Pilates class for some much-needed relaxation and a sense of routine. These little breaks helped me recharge and feel more at home in my new city. I also grabbed a refreshing drink from Lalaland – a perfect pick-me-up amidst all the information. On Sunday, I stumbled upon a lively farmers market with a fun strawberry-themed balloon display – it was a great way to see the local community vibe. And yes, a celebratory dinner with friends (pizza and pasta!) was definitely on the agenda after all the orientation info overload! For orientation itself, I recommend bringing a comfortable pair of shoes (you'll do a lot of walking!), a notebook and pen for questions, and an open mind. Stay hydrated, and a portable charger for your phone can be a lifesaver. Overall, UH orientation is your first significant step. Embrace the newness, ask all the questions, and allow yourself to explore. It's an exciting, sometimes overwhelming, but ultimately rewarding beginning. Go Coogs!
