🔍 I absolutely enjoyed this novel! It was a light- hearted and funny classic who-did-it murder mystery. The author did a wonderful job of portraying multiple pov’s all the while pushing the plot along and releasing more clues to the readers. For someone who loves trying to solve the murder along reading, this story does a great job of wrapping up the story.
🔍 I appreciated the writing style of multiple different pov’s of each character- to truly reveal and show us their true characters and intentions. I found myself investigating along our main character Vera Wong. Many of her chapters being very likable and diversely relatable, all being on some spectrum of the Asian diaspora. The author portrayal of Asian culture and tradition was very real and accurate to immigrant parents in the western world. The expectations of what it means to be a “filial” and successful child. Although many of the mannerisms of Vera Wong might come off as toxic Asian mentality with high expectations, the author truly captures the family & community aspect of what an elder in the Asian community looks like. Vera shows her affection through cooking healthy and healing meals for the ones she loves. I love how she she’s able to capture the good and bad of the cultural traditions, anchoring culture while living in a western world.
🔍 As the story was unfolding, I quite enjoyed the set-up and execution of the sequence of events in solving this murder mystery. ⚠️spoiler alert -ish ⚠️ I really liked the plot twist of the ending. I was tryna solve it along the way and was so very impressed when they revealed the culprit! Definitely appreciate being surprised when the wrapped up ties up into a neat and nice bow 🎀
🔍 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars! First 5 star review of the year! This book hit all the points on my list for a well written ‘who-dunnit’ novel. Nice character development & diversity, descriptive commentary that provides clues so the reader can follow and search alongside the characters, and last but not least- no gaps in the wrap up summary when unfolding the murderer!
