General surgery will be the last of my surgery rotations that I’m doing during my surgery clerkship this year. I will be on it for four weeks so let’s talk about what general surgery is.
General surgery is a block of medicine that’s responsible for preoperative, operative and postoperative management of patients, including a broad spectrum of diseases and conditions. They focus a lot on anatomy, physiology, metabolism, pathology, wound healing, intensive care, and a lot more.
Like the general in general surgeon implies, a general surgeon knows a little bit about everything. They usually have a lot of knowledge and expertise as related to their patients diseases.
General surgeons are trying to operate on the alimentary tract, the abdomen, the breast, skin, and soft tissue, and the endocrine system.
The training to become a general surgeon includes doing four years of a bachelors degree, four years of medical school, and then applying to at least five years of a general surgery residency. After that residency, they’re allowed to further sub specialized by doing a fellowship.
