He's just been a puppy! 🐶
Now that Beau's through his gelding recovery, I have time to learn about who he will be as a gelding as his hormons go down. It's very individual how a late cuttttt gelding will turn out. It can take up to a year in some cases to see all the changes, if there are any.
This in hand work, is less to do with teaching him anything, it's most about getting to know him in his gelded state. Are is reactions different. Are his answers different. Already, he isn't chewing his lead near as much, for instance, as a gelding. His muscle tone seems softer. His tail isn't clamped down anymore either! I can move it side to side when grooming! For near 7 years that tail was clamped down and wouldn't budge without effort when he was in tact. Now I can swing it effortlessly over to the side since gelding him. Little differences! I'm enjoying the process! 🥰
It's only been 7 weeks since he was gelded too. It will be so interesting to learn about the new him. I'm excited!
Gelding is a significant step in a horse's life, affecting both physically and mentally. The timeframe for these changes can vary. In the first months post-gelding, observe behavioral shifts such as reduced aggression and anxiety. Over time, the horse's muscle tone and body posture may also change, with a more relaxed demeanor becoming prominent. It's crucial to monitor your horse's training and responses during this period. Engaging in groundwork can accelerate their adaptation as you bond and learn about their new personality. Patience is key, as complete transformation might take up to a year. Regular check-ins with a veterinarian can help guide your understanding of your horse's health and behavior post-gelding. Embrace this journey with your horse and enjoy the process of discovering who they are becoming.
