I was somewhat disappointed with I, Medusa, only because I thought it was going to tell her story as a badass. I was also disappointed with The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires. There was a different take on vampires. It was not as suspenseful and scary as I thought it would be.
July was an interesting month for my reading adventures, particularly with novels that explored mythological and supernatural themes. Although I had high expectations for 'I, Medusa,' hoping for a fierce and empowering retelling of Medusa's story, the book didn't quite deliver the badass narrative I envisioned. It was a reminder that mythological retellings can sometimes take unexpected directions that don’t align with every reader's expectations. Similarly, 'The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires' presented a unique take on vampire lore, blending Southern charm with supernatural elements. However, the book leaned more towards an atmospheric and character-driven story rather than intense suspense or horror, which was a bit underwhelming for someone anticipating a chilling vampire thriller. This experience highlighted how vampire fiction can vary widely—from horror to romance, to dark comedy—and readers’ expectations play a huge role in their enjoyment. From my reading in July, I realized the importance of going into books with flexible expectations, especially in genres as diverse as mythology and supernatural fiction. It also encouraged me to explore other highly praised novels, like Gillian Flynn's 'Sharp Objects,' which is known for its gripping suspense and psychological depth. If you're drawn to mythological retellings or vampire stories, it's worth trying a variety of titles to find the style and tone that resonate with you. Adding to this reflection, I found that reading with an open mind can sometimes lead to pleasant surprises, even when a book isn’t exactly what you anticipated. Editing styles, narrative choices, and thematic focus all shape the reading experience, so embracing the unexpected can enrich your literary journey. July’s reading choices reminded me that every book has something unique to offer, even if it’s not the experience originally sought.
