As a pediatric occupational therapist, I've found that the key to successful therapy is keeping children engaged while targeting essential developmental skills. Many children I work with, especially those fascinated by cars, respond enthusiastically to this task, which increases their motivation to participate and practice consistently. Block matching exercises can be tailored easily to the child's needs. For example, enhancing the task by adding steps that require matching colors in a specific order encourages not just visual perception but also sequencing skills and following multi-step directions. This adaptability makes block matching a versatile tool in pediatric OT sessions. One of my favorite resources, The Jungle Crawl book, offers interactive brain-boosting movements that work on primitive reflex integration—a foundation for motor development and sensory processing. Movements like animal walks mimic reflex patterns such as ATNR (Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex), STNR (Symmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex), TLR (Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex), Spinal Galant, and MORO reflexes. Incorporating these movements in therapy helps children improve body awareness, balance, and coordination in a playful way that holds their interest longer. In my experience, combining these activities creates a well-rounded therapy plan that addresses various developmental areas while making the process enjoyable for kids. Sharing these techniques has been invaluable, especially when parents and educators participate and practice these exercises at home or school, leading to more consistent progress.
