The Hardest Identity To Let Go Of….

I think one of the biggest identity crises in the Church today isn’t that people don’t know who they are.

It’s that we’ve become more attached to our titles than our identity in Christ.

We’ve become really good at introducing ourselves with what we’ve accomplished. Pastor. CEO. Entrepreneur. Wife. Mother. Influencer. Doctor. None of those titles are inherently wrong. God gives people assignments, influence, and opportunities. But titles make terrible foundations.

This may be unpopular, but I think it’s worth asking.

If you need the title in order to feel seen, respected, or valuable, has the title quietly become your identity?

I’ve even seen people become so attached to being called “Doctor” that the title becomes more important than the substance behind it. If a title communicates something you haven’t actually earned or are relying on to establish credibility, people can be misled. More importantly, your worth was never supposed to rest on a prefix before your name.

The deeper question isn’t whether people call you “Doctor.” The deeper question is, if nobody ever called you by that title again, would you still know who you are?

Because Ephesians 1 doesn’t introduce us by our accomplishments. It introduces us as chosen, adopted, redeemed, forgiven, and sealed by the Holy Spirit. Peter doesn’t tell believers to strive until they become a royal priesthood. He says they already are one because of Christ.

So here’s the question I’ve been wrestling with while studying for Identity Beyond Titles:

Is your title the defining factor of who you are, or have you allowed it to distract you from who God called you to become?

Because one day the position may change.

The platform may shrink.

The business may close.

The degree or licensure may fade and solely become a part of your background

But if your identity is rooted in Christ, none of those things can take away who you already are.

Ephesians 1 reminds us who we are in Christ.

1 Peter 2 reminds us whose we are.

That’s a foundation no title can ever give, and no title can ever take away.

... Read moreMany of us struggle deeply with the pressure to perform and maintain certain titles or roles because these labels seem to define our worth to others and ourselves. From personal experience, I noticed that when I identified too closely with my job title or social roles, any change or loss in those areas left me feeling lost and uncertain about who I really was. It was only after reflecting on scriptures like Ephesians 1 and 1 Peter 2 that I began to understand and appreciate that my true identity is rooted in being chosen, redeemed, and loved by Christ—not in any external accolades or positions. This understanding has helped me navigate seasons of transition—whether a promotion didn't come through, a relationship shifted, or a platform I once had changed. Instead of spiraling into feelings of inadequacy, I remind myself that titles are assignments or periods in life but not the foundation of my self-worth. Titles can be transient and may fade, but being God’s own possession is permanent and unchanging. Furthermore, placing identity in Christ frees us from the exhausting need to prove ourselves continuously. It’s liberating to realize that God’s love and our value aren’t earned by titles, influence, or social applause but are gifts we already possess. This perspective also invites compassion towards others who may struggle with identity tied to their roles, encouraging us to support each other in discovering and living out our true worth beyond any label. Ultimately, embracing identity beyond titles calls us to a deeper relationship with God, where we find security and purpose not in external recognition but in knowing who we are in Him. It's a continuous journey, but one that leads to lasting peace and confidence, regardless of what our circumstances look like.
