The Power of Disconnecting

The Power of Disconnecting 🔌

Recently, while I was away, we lost power. No TV, no phones, just candlelight and conversation. It made me realize how rare these moments are—how we often need an event to force us into true presence. But what if we didn’t wait for something to happen? What if we chose to disconnect intentionally?

We live in a world that constantly demands our attention—endless scrolling, news cycles designed to keep us hooked, notifications pulling us away from real life. But our minds aren’t built for this level of stimulation. Chronic exposure to screens and information overload can spike cortisol levels, disrupt sleep, and leave us feeling more disconnected than ever.

When we step away from the noise, something incredible happens:

✨ Stress decreases

✨ Sleep improves

✨ Creativity flows

✨ Relationships deepen

✨ Presence becomes effortless

True connection isn’t found through a screen—it’s in deep conversations, shared laughter, and quiet moments with yourself.

So, I challenge you: create intentional disconnection. Put the phone down during meals. Take a walk without distractions. Set a time to unplug each day. It’s not about removing technology but about reclaiming your presence.

When was the last time you truly disconnected? Let’s start making it a practice, not an afterthought.

... Read moreIt’s funny how a forced power outage can be such a wake-up call. For me, the idea of 'intentional disconnection' wasn't just a concept; it became a lifeline. I used to think I was managing my screen time, but looking back, I was constantly tethered. The incessant pings, the endless scroll – it was exhausting, and honestly, I felt more disconnected from myself and the people around me than ever before. I started small, inspired by the desire for that calm depicted in a quiet, candlelit room. My first step was designating "digital sundown" – no screens an hour before bed. The difference in my sleep quality was almost immediate. Instead of my mind racing with information overload, I found myself winding down naturally. I also started taking walks without my phone, much like strolling through a serene winter landscape, letting my thoughts wander freely. It was incredible how much more I noticed – the crisp air, the sounds of birds, the subtle changes in nature that I'd previously walked right past, head down, glued to a screen. Of course, it wasn't always easy. There were moments of FOMO (fear of missing out), the urge to check just one more notification. But I learned to be gentle with myself. I created 'tech-free zones' in my home, starting with the dining table and eventually my bedroom. It’s amazing what happens when you remove the digital distractions; conversations flow more freely, meals become mindful experiences, and evenings are filled with reading, journaling, or simply enjoying quiet time. One of the most profound shifts has been in my creativity. When my mind isn't constantly processing new information, it has space to generate its own ideas. I've picked up old hobbies, started sketching again, and even found new solutions to work challenges during these unplugged moments. It's like my brain finally gets a chance to breathe and organize itself. This practice has truly deepened my relationships too. Instead of half-listening while checking my phone, I'm fully present, making eye contact, and engaging more meaningfully with loved ones. It’s a powerful reminder that true connection isn’t found through a screen. So, if you're feeling the pull to reclaim your peace and presence, I genuinely encourage you to explore intentional disconnection. Start small, be kind to yourself, and observe the changes. Whether it's a daily digital detox, a tech-free weekend, or just putting your phone away during meals, every little bit helps. It’s not about abandoning technology, but about consciously choosing when and how it fits into your life, allowing you to live more fully and vibrantly.

I’m actually thinking of doing this on a weekly fast. I can’t disconnect from technology at work but I want to not use my phone/social media and not turn on the tv after work for a whole week.
