#onthisday three years ago I thought this was just a cute video & had ZERO plans of being a surgeon… now I’m just a few weeks away from finding out where I will be a surgery resident. Past me would be proud. #medstudent #medschool #residency #matchday
Looking back at my own journey towards becoming a surgery resident, I can truly relate to the mix of excitement and nervous anticipation that comes with Match Day. Three years ago, I had no concrete plans to pursue surgery; it was just a fascinating idea sparked by a casual video. Fast forward, and now I am preparing for the all-important day where I find out where I will be continuing my training. One thing that really helped me throughout this process was practicing mindfulness and staying grounded. I often found myself rehearsing how I would react to both good and unexpected news, setting up mental preparedness for whatever the outcome might be. This mindset helped me maintain focus on the hard work leading up to this day, from long hours studying complex topics in med school to refining my skills in clinical settings. A particularly memorable moment was imagining the day I would be in the operating room (OR), blasting my favorite well-loved (wlw) bops to keep the energy up. This quirky personal ritual brought a fun element to an otherwise intense environment, reminding me to enjoy small moments even in high-pressure situations. For current med students and those interested in surgery residency, my advice is to embrace the journey fully: every challenge, every late-night study session, and every patient interaction shapes who you become as a future surgeon. Remember, past versions of yourself — the ones unsure or doubtful — should be acknowledged with pride for the growth you've achieved. Above all, trust that your hard work and passion will guide you. Match Day will come and go, but your commitment to medicine and surgery will set the foundation for an impactful career ahead.
