Today is a big day for me (and the next two weeks) on my health journey!
48 days ago, I decided to try healing my vasculitis naturally. For the past 48 days, I’ve stuck to an anti-inflammatory diet to reduce inflammation in my body. That means eating whole foods and avoiding processed foods, refined carbs, and sugar (there’s more I personally avoid, but these are the main ones).
Being 48 days in, I thought I’d have more energy and my brain fog would be gone by now. I’m definitely in a better place than before, but nothing happens overnight—we have to trust the process and keep going!
This week, I learned more about the two tests I get regularly: sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein (CRP). Sedimentation rate measures chronic, long-term inflammation. Two weeks ago, my ESR was 8, and today it’s down to 6! I’m thrilled with this progress! CRP, on the other hand, tracks acute, short-term inflammation and rises quickly. Mine went from 1 to 3.6, likely because I started running/walking almost daily after being inactive for a while. Exercise can temporarily increase inflammation, so both these numbers are fantastic news!
Now, the big change: I’m lowering my steroids. Tapering is easier at higher doses, and over the past two months, I’ve dropped by 10mg at a time. But as doses get lower, it’s tougher to make big cuts. Today, with my doctor’s approval, I’m taking a leap of faith, dropping from 30mg to 20mg of prednisone daily—a huge step when your body depends on it. Over the next two weeks, this diet and my body will show me if this approach is truly working. There’s a chance this taper might be too drastic, and I may need to adjust, but I won’t know unless I try!
Thank you to everyone who’s joined me on this crazy journey. I’m so grateful for every DM, text, and phone call. Your support makes it so easy to keep going, and I feel so lucky to have such an amazing community.
And just remember: Just because it’s taking time doesn’t mean it’s not happening.
