Vulnerability Ain’t the Problem

I don’t mind being soft.

I don’t mind opening up.

I don’t mind handing someone

the pieces of me

that ain’t all polished and pretty.

But what I do mind?

Giving that softness

to people who fumble it,

drop it,

or use it like currency

to get what they want.

I don’t fear vulnerability.

I fear misplacing it.

Handing it over to someone

who turns out to be

one of Satan’s roaches—

slick, shameless, and impossible to kill.

So no, I’m not cold.

I’m not guarded.

I’m just careful now.

Because some people

don’t hold your heart.

They infest it.

... Read moreIn a world where emotional openness is often viewed as a weakness, understanding vulnerability can be empowering. It’s essential to recognize that being vulnerable doesn’t mean being naïve. Many people associate vulnerability with weakness; however, it's actually a strength that enables deeper connections with others. The truth is, sharing our authentic selves requires bravery. Mistaking vulnerability for weakness often leads to heartbreak and disappointment when trust is misplaced. Those who take advantage of our openness can leave scars that linger long after the moment has passed. It’s important to discern who deserves our vulnerability. We must focus on nurturing genuine relationships where our softness is recognized and valued. As we embrace our vulnerabilities, we also arm ourselves with discernment, choosing carefully who we unfold to. This doesn’t mean we close ourselves off; rather, we practice mindful sharing. Whether in friendships, romantic relationships, or even professional settings, identifying trustworthy individuals is crucial. Ultimately, our ability to be vulnerable should be celebrated, not feared. The key lies in understanding that while we can be open and caring, our hearts are precious and meant for those who will cherish them, not exploit them. In doing so, we create stronger bonds and a more supportive community.
