DNF

Yeaaa soo I knew that I didn’t like romance books but this book really sealed the deal for me. I honestly feel like the author put wayy too much detail into the paragraphs (idk if that makes sense). Like she would spend one paragraph just talking about what a side character was wearing. Like okay.??? Get to the point. Just to never talk about that character again. I think I would’ve liked it if there wasn’t as much detail.

It reminded me of those Hallmark movies where the female character is just sitting there looking into the males characters eyes, they sit for 30seconds just looking at each other, and then they turn away really fast like a “omg that’s so embarrassing”. It felt like that but over and over and over again.

I know a lot of people (especially black girl readers) like this book but me personally, it’s a no. I was hoping that I would pick up this book and it would change my mind about the romance genre but it didn’t.

2025/2/23 Edited to

... Read moreRomance novels have always been a polarizing genre, often sparking debates among readers about their merits and pitfalls. A recurring theme in many romance stories is the reliance on stereotypical tropes, such as drawn-out gazes and over-the-top emotional moments, reminiscent of those classic Hallmark films. Critics argue that these elements can detract from the character development and storytelling, leaving readers wanting more substance in the narrative. For readers who appreciate depth and complexity in their novels, it can be frustrating when a book prioritizes style over substance. Many readers, especially within the #blackgirlbookcommunity, look for stories that resonate with their experiences and values, too. It’s essential for authors to strike a balance between vivid descriptions and meaningful character arcs that contribute to a narrative's overall impact. Books like Honey and Spice by Bolu Babalola offer a refreshing take on romance by blending humor and realism, providing a different experience that might appeal more to those seeking authenticity in storytelling. As readers, we crave narratives that not only entertain us but also leave us feeling understood and represented. This is especially true for niche audiences who often find themselves underrepresented in mainstream literature. If you find yourself disenchanted with certain tropes in romance novels, consider exploring diverse authors and stories within the genre. Engaging with different perspectives and styles could help broaden your appreciation for romance, perhaps even changing your mind about the genre one book at a time.

I feel you on the detail! It was a slow burn and I did finish it. Her Love In Color book was better. It had several stories that were better written but if you aren’t into romance you may not want to read that one neither lol

Books I wish I DNF’d ❌
This was before I knew how to DNF a book and… I wish I had with these. My main reasons were either the book was way too unrealistic for a thriller/unbelievable, not age appropriate or just straight up boring 🥱 No hate if you liked these! They just were my cup of tea and that’s okay! ✨
