My Favorite Science Books in my Homeschool Library

#lemon8diarychallenge

I LOVE finding interesting books to add to my homeschool library.

Sometimes we use these books along with specific curriculum or planned lessons and other times I leave the books available for my kids to explore on their own.

We have a lot of books that we have collected over the years but these are some of our favorite supplemental science books that we've added to our personal "homeschool library".

🔬The Bernstein Bears Big Book of Science and Nature

🔬Basher Science: Extreme Weather

🔬Usborne Books-First Encyclopedia of the Human Body

🔬Basher Science: Chemistry

🔬Usborne Beginner Series Science Collection

🔬Janice VanCleave's Science Around the World

🔬Usborne Books: Lift the Flap, Periodic Table

🔬Usborne Books: Lift the Flap, How Your Body Works

🔬DK Books: The Mysteries of the Universe

... Read moreHey fellow homeschool parents! Finding the right non-fiction science books can truly transform your learning journey. I've learned that it's not just about covering subjects, but about sparking genuine curiosity and making science come alive, especially for those crucial middle school years. These books become invaluable tools, whether you're following a strict curriculum or simply want to encourage independent exploration. When I’m selecting books for our homeschool library, I always look for titles that don't just present facts but make the information accessible and exciting. For instance, sometimes you want something broad and engaging, like a 'big book of science' that covers a wide array of topics. I've found that books with vivid illustrations and interactive elements are particularly effective in holding attention and deepening understanding. Take, for example, 'The Berenstain Bears' Big Book of Science and Nature.' While it might sound geared towards younger kids, its gentle introduction to basic scientific concepts through familiar characters makes it excellent for early elementary and even a nostalgic refresher for older students. It’s perfect for setting a foundational understanding. Then there are books that dive deeper into specific areas, like Basher Science's 'Extreme Weather' or 'Chemistry.' These books use cartoon-like illustrations of phenomena like tornadoes or representations of chemical elements, making complex subjects less intimidating and more memorable. My kids love how each element or weather event has its own personality! For subjects like human anatomy or the universe, visual appeal is key. 'Usborne First Encyclopedia of the Human Body' with its clear diagrams, including a running skeleton and illustrations of blood cells and organs, truly helps visualize what’s happening inside us. Similarly, 'DK The Mysteries of the Universe' captivates with stunning imagery of galaxies, planets, and celestial objects, making the vastness of space feel a little more tangible. These aren't just for reading; they spark discussions and encourage further research. Interactive books, like Usborne's 'Lift-the-Flap Periodic Table' or 'How Your Body Works,' are fantastic for reinforcing learning. The element characters on the Periodic Table or the detailed illustrations of internal organs and facts about heartbeats and bones in 'How Your Body Works' make learning feel like an engaging game. They’re brilliant for hands-on learners and help solidify concepts in a fun way. And let's not forget about practical science! 'Janice VanCleave's Science Around the World' is a gem because it combines information about different biomes, like those featuring polar bears, zebras, toucans, and snakes, with experiments. This is where non-fiction really shines – moving beyond just reading to doing! For middle schoolers, these kinds of non-fiction science books bridge the gap between basic concepts and more advanced studies. They provide a rich foundation in various scientific disciplines, from biology and chemistry to physics and astronomy, without feeling overwhelming. They allow for both structured learning alongside a curriculum and spontaneous, interest-led deep dives. I often leave these books accessible, and it’s amazing to see which topics capture their attention on any given day. They pick up 'Usborne Beginners Science' box sets, with titles like 'Your Body' or 'Planet Earth,' and just start exploring. It’s all about nurturing that inherent curiosity. So, if you’re building your homeschool library, especially with an eye towards engaging non-fiction science for middle schoolers, definitely consider a mix of these types of books. Look for visual engagement, interactive elements, and topics that align with your child's interests. They truly make learning an adventure!
