Self-care is often misunderstood as just pampering ourselves, but real self-care goes much deeper and requires honest effort and patience. From my experience, one of the hardest but most rewarding aspects is learning to cancel plans without sinking into a guilt spiral. It took me time to accept that prioritizing my mental health sometimes means saying no, and that this is not selfish but necessary. Another challenge I faced was moving my body on days I genuinely didn’t feel like it. Whether it’s a gentle walk or some stretching, these small movements help break the cycle of inertia and improve mood, even if motivation is low. One of the most powerful but uncomfortable self-care practices is sitting with uneasy feelings instead of distracting myself through doom scrolling or other avoidance habits. This helps in building emotional resilience and understanding the roots of our discomfort. It’s okay to feel uneasy; accepting that can open the door to healing. Self-love is a journey with ups and downs, and being 'bad at self-care' at times is completely normal. What matters most is the commitment to keep trying and practicing these new habits. By sharing my experiences and struggles, I hope to encourage others that it’s a gradual process that everyone can improve with kindness and persistence.
