What do I do?

Has anyone ever had their iPad glitch out like this? One second, I was using it normally, and the next, every single thing on the screen (text, icons, menus, literally everything) turned into question marks. Buttons are still there, but I can’t tell what they do, even the search bar and settings menus are just rows of “???” instead of words. It’s like my iPad forgot how to display text entirely.

I’ve never seen anything this weird, usually glitches are frozen screens or app crashes, not a full on question mark takeover. I’m assuming it’s a software bug, but I don’t know how to fix it when I can’t read any of the options to restart or reset. Should I try a hard reset first? Or is this something I need to take to an Apple Store?

... Read moreOh no, I totally get how frustrating it is when your iPad starts acting up, especially with something as bizarre as question marks taking over your entire screen! I’ve been there with my tech acting weird, and it feels like your device is speaking a foreign language. Seeing all your text and icons replaced by 'question mark symbols' is definitely a head-scratcher and not a typical frozen screen or app crash. Let’s dive into what might be causing this strange 'iPad glitch screen' and what you can try, even when you can’t read a single option: What Might Be Happening? (Beyond Just a 'Mario Virus') Software Corruption: This is often the prime suspect for such widespread display issues. An incomplete update, a corrupted app, or even a system file error could mess with how your iPad renders fonts and graphical elements. It’s highly unlikely to be a traditional 'virus' on iOS, but corrupted data can mimic similar chaotic behavior. Display Driver Glitch: Your iPad's operating system has components that tell the screen how to draw everything. If these drivers get temporarily bugged, you might see unusual screen symbols or visual artifacts, including that 'blue question mark instead of images on iPad' from the OCR, which could just be a visual corruption rather than a specific 'Mario virus' type of malware. Font/Character Set Errors: Less common, but sometimes the system's ability to access or display specific fonts can go awry, leading to placeholder symbols like question marks. Actionable Steps When You Can't Read Anything (Blind Troubleshooting): Since you can't interact with on-screen menus, your best bet is a force restart, also known as a hard reset. This won't erase your data but can often clear up temporary software glitches. For iPads with a Home Button (older models): Press and hold both the Home button and the Top button (or Side button) simultaneously. Keep holding them down, even if you see the screen go black, until the Apple logo appears. This usually takes about 10-20 seconds. Once the Apple logo appears, you can release the buttons. For iPads without a Home Button (newer Face ID models): Quickly press and release the Volume Up button. Then, quickly press and release the Volume Down button. Finally, press and hold the Top button (or Side button). Keep holding it down until the Apple logo appears. This sequence is key, and it can feel a bit tricky the first time. After a successful force restart, your iPad should boot up normally. If the glitch persists, try the force restart one more time. What if a Force Restart Doesn't Work? If your iPad is still showing 'glitched iPad screen' symbols after multiple force restarts, it might be time to connect it to a computer: Connect to a Computer (Mac or PC): Plug your iPad into a Mac (using Finder) or a PC (using iTunes). Sometimes, the computer will recognize the iPad even if its screen is glitched, allowing you to update or restore it. You might need to put it into recovery mode (which involves a slightly different button sequence while connected to the computer) if it's not recognized immediately. This allows you to reinstall iOS, which often fixes deep-seated software issues without losing your data if you choose the 'Update' option first. When to Head to the Apple Store: If none of these troubleshooting steps work, or if you suspect physical damage despite the screen looking okay, then taking it to an Apple Store or an authorized service provider is your next best step. They have diagnostic tools that can pinpoint whether it's a software problem that needs a more intensive restore or a hardware issue that requires repair. Hopefully, one of these steps helps you get your iPad back to normal and you won't have to deal with those bizarre 'iPad symbols and meanings' for much longer! Yes do a hard reset on your iPad. Before you do that though make sure that you have backed your information so that you can put it back on once it’s done resetting

“Omg that would freak me out too 😭 I’d try a hard reset first — usually fixes the weird text bugs! If not, definitely an Apple Store moment.”

Chips are my favorite, go-to snack, so when I learned they had a long list of ingredients that I couldn’t even pronounce I knew something was up. I did a little bit of research and found out those words I couldn’t pronounce were CHEMICALS that are directly linked to weight gain, high blood pressure
