As a fellow bookworm, there's nothing more frustrating than picking up a highly anticipated read only to find yourself utterly disconnected from the characters. That's exactly what happened to me with a recent book (which I ultimately DNF'd – for those wondering, DNF stands for 'Did Not Finish,' a common term in the reading community for books we just can't bring ourselves to complete!). While the imagery was exquisite, the characters were so underdeveloped, it made the entire story fall flat. So, what exactly does 'underdeveloped character' mean, and why is it such a common criticism? In my experience, an underdeveloped character is one who lacks depth, clear motivations, and a believable personality. They often feel like archetypes or tropes rather than real individuals. For instance, in my recent read, the Female Main Character (FMC) came across as a total 'pick-me' – her actions felt forced, designed to gain male attention rather than stemming from genuine internal conflict or growth. Similarly, the Male Main Character (MMC), a supposed 'shadow daddy,' was just not believable; his broody demeanor felt like a costume rather than a core part of his being. There was no real nuance or complexity to either of them. When characters are underdeveloped, it severely impacts the entire reading experience. You find yourself asking, 'Why are they doing this?' or 'Why should I care?' There's no intrigue, no emotional connection, and certainly no chemistry between them. The so-called 'found family' dynamics can also feel incredibly forced and unearned, as the OCR highlights. Instead of organic interactions, everything feels predictable and unentertaining because the characters themselves aren't driving the story; they're just moving pieces on a board. It often feels like the author is trying too hard to emulate popular trends (like trying to be the next 'Fourth Wing,' if you know what I mean!) without laying the necessary groundwork for character depth. Signs of an underdeveloped character often include inconsistent actions or reactions, a lack of personal growth throughout the narrative, relying solely on surface-level traits or stereotypes, and having motivations that don't make sense within the context of the story. They might have generic dialogue that could belong to anyone, rather than a distinct voice. Ultimately, well-developed characters are the heart of any compelling story. They have flaws, strengths, desires, and fears that make them relatable and their journeys meaningful.
