Life as an Autism Mom 🧩

Sometimes as autism moms, we grieve the life we thought we would have.

But I’ve learned to move through that… to accept what is, and find peace in it.

Now, I try to slow down and truly enjoy the moments we do have—

even something as simple as a short walk to a little local shop.

Because honestly… those little moments?

They mean everything to us 🤍

... Read moreLiving as an autism mom brings unique challenges and emotional growth. I’ve found that accepting the unpredictability of life and focusing on small, meaningful moments truly helps in cultivating peace. For example, taking a short walk to a local honey store as described in the original post isn’t just a simple outing—it’s a sensory-rich experience that helps with regulation and connection. From my experience, movement and walking play a vital role in keeping kids on the spectrum calm and grounded. Even amid sensory sensitivities, such as discomfort with loud noises, the rhythm of a walk and the fresh air can help soothe restlessness significantly. Incorporating visits to nature-adjacent places, like honey shops with their cute beehives, flowers, and natural products, can add layers of enjoyment and fascination for both mom and child. One particularly touching aspect is how these outings offer opportunities for natural learning and exploration. For instance, talking about bees, honey varieties, and how these local businesses operate can be both educational and engaging. Products like organic honey offer additional wellness benefits—some varieties help with allergies or coughs, which can be a bonus for families managing health alongside autism. AAC devices, such as the one mentioned for Travis, help children communicate even during these moments, enhancing their ability to express preferences or needs during outings. From my perspective, recognizing and celebrating these small victories is essential. Instead of focusing on what life “should have been,” embracing these little, joyful experiences builds resilience and deepens bonds. For other autism parents, I encourage incorporating calming activities that involve movement and gentle sensory input into your routine. Nature walks, visits to local shops or markets with familiar sights and smells, and opportunities to engage all senses can be grounding for both caregiver and child. Allow yourself the grace to grieve the expected life while remaining open to the unexpected joys that present themselves. These moments truly mean everything on the autism journey.
