"One" in an ancient Thai belief involving a baby, it is believed that from the birth of the child from the womb, there is a mystery to take care of and heal, called "Mother Buy," which some believe is a child's angel, while some areas believe that it is a ghost or spirit that takes care of the child.
According to ancient belief, the buyer will stay with the child from birth to around the age of 12 months or one year before leaving the child. The buyer's duties may be to protect, care, tease, or in some cases believe that the buyer is the cause of the child's illness if it is cherished and wants to bring the child back to live with him.
In the old days, the belief in the buying mother was considered part of the way of life, especially during periods of unadvanced medicine. If a baby developed fever, illness, persistent crying, or an unexplained disorder, people might believe it was caused by the disturbance of the buying mother.
There is also the belief that babies who have just given birth for a few days often smile in their sleep and wake. Some ancient people believed that they were smiling at a mother who bought or visited. When the child is about 3-4 days old, the parents may perform a gift ceremony to declare the mystery that the child has human parents and is the child of the family.
For beliefs in the central and northern regions, a total of 7 buying mothers are mentioned. Each of them is stationed with a child by birth: Sunday, "Fine Ma Wan," with a lion's head, red body, Monday, "Wan Nong," with a horse's head, off-white skin, Tuesday, "pure shrug," with a histula or buffalo head, pink body, Wednesday, "Three Tales," with an elephant's head, green body, Thursday, "Galo Suffering," with a deer's head, light yellow body, Friday, "Young Giant," with a cove head, light blue body, and Saturday. " Lye "has a tiger's head, a black body, and my mother bought all seven, and she has a golden costume according to her belief.
In the south, there is a belief that the "buying mother" is an unseen thing, which cannot be clearly identified as an angel or a ghost, but has a function like a baby's nanny, with four buying mothers, which are women: "sprout, stir, blow and fruit."
For the northeast, the belief in the buying mother was influenced by Khmer culture, with a different belief that the "buying mother" is an old mother whose job is to create a baby in the womb, and then keep it until the child is born, and keep it in love.
But when a child has a new mother, the buyer may become jealous and want to live with the child in a ghost town, so the belief arises that if the child is sick or malformed, it may be because the buyer tries to disturb or try to take the child back.
As a result of that belief, child adoption rituals took place in many areas, each with different details.
In the central region, there is a ceremony called "Mother's Purchase Card." The ceremony will make a card from a rectangular banana bracket, floor with banana leaves, and put food such as rice, water, shrimp, fish, and a female clay doll on the lap. When the word is finished, the head of the clay doll will be broken. It is believed that the mother will buy the doll to play for the child so that the child does not bother or make the child sick.
The south has a ceremony called "Make a Mother Buy" or "Lose a Mother Buy." It is believed to be auspicious for the child and helps to be well maintained by the mother to buy. The ceremony is usually determined according to the child's birthday. If it is during the ascent, use an odd day. And if it is during the daytime, use a pair of days according to the beliefs of each locality.
In the northeast, there is a baby ceremony, bringing a baby to the glide, and saying, "Three days, ghost child, four days, who's child?" Then the parents will accept it as their child. The ceremony will return the child to the parents. According to the belief, the original purchase will recognize that the child has become a child and will not bother again.
In addition to belief, "Mother Buys" reflects the way of life of people in the past, especially in an age when medicine is not yet advanced. Many infant illnesses cannot find a clear cause. People use local beliefs, rituals and wisdom to explain what happened, including using it as an anchor to the family mind.
The belief in the mother-to-buy is also evidenced in the "Mother-to-buy verses," which are inscribed at Wat Pho and are related to the drug texts, reflecting that the mother-to-buy is related to the idea of illness and treatment of children in old Thai society.
Today, the belief in buying mothers does not influence childcare as much as in the past, because advances in medicine have made it possible to diagnose and treat children's illnesses more principled; however, the buying mother story remains part of an interesting cultural heritage and folk belief.
After all, "buying mother" may not just be a matter of angels or ghosts, but also reflect the love, concern, and fear of parents in the past for their baby; for no matter how many generations have passed, the desire of parents remains the same: to wish their child safety, strength, and best grown up.
