AVOCADO PURÉE FOR BABY

Making avocado purée for my baby!

Sooo, I was planning on using fresh avocados for this one and I actually had a whole bag but while waiting for them to ripen, I waited a little too long and they went bad. Whoops 🫠. However, I really needed something else to make because I was doing a done of baby food prepping in preparation for our little weekend parents trip away while my mom watches our daughter. I had already used the rest of my fresh fruits and veggies so I went to the freezer to see what we had and low & behold we had some frozen avocados! Yay! Moral of the story here is that you can use either fresh or frozen :) .

How I made it:

1. If you are using fresh avocados (making sure they are ripe), peel and cut up your avocados into smaller pieces. If you are using frozen avocados, place your pieces in a bag and submerge in hot water to thaw until they are mushy

2. Add the avocado pieces to a blender along with your liquid of choice which can be either breastmilk, formula, or water)

3. Blend!

4. Serve or store (don’t mind the one sweet potato cube in my ice tray haha)

... Read moreWhen I first started my baby's solids journey, I was a bit overwhelmed! There are so many options out there, but one food that quickly became a staple for us was avocado. It's truly a powerhouse for little ones – packed with healthy fats for brain development, fiber for digestion, and so many essential vitamins. It's naturally creamy, which makes it perfect as a first food, and my little one took to it right away! I love that it’s so versatile and surprisingly easy to prepare, even on those super busy days. Choosing the right avocado is key. For fresh ones, you want them to be ripe but not mushy – they should yield slightly to gentle pressure. If you're like me and sometimes misjudge ripeness (or just need a quick option!), using frozen avocados is a total lifesaver. I often grab those 'Private Selection Diced Hass Avocados' from the freezer aisle. They're already ripe and ready, which saves so much time and avoids the 'too ripe' predicament! If using frozen, remember to thaw them until they're nice and 'mushy' as the image shows, often by submerging the bag in warm water for a few minutes. This makes them super easy to blend. Getting the perfect consistency is important for little eaters. For younger babies just starting solids, aim for a super smooth, thin puree. As they get older and more accustomed to textures, you can leave it a bit chunkier for mashed avocado. When adding liquid, breastmilk or formula is wonderful for added nutrition and a familiar taste, but plain water works perfectly too. I've found that starting with less liquid and adding a bit more until you reach your desired smoothness is the best way to control the texture. My 'Magic Bullet Mini blender' has been a fantastic tool for this – it gets super smooth results quickly and is so easy to clean! Avocado puree is amazing, but it can brown pretty fast once exposed to air. To keep it fresh, I always add a tiny squeeze of lemon juice (just a few drops!) – it helps a lot without affecting the taste much. For storage, those blue silicone ice cube trays are my best friend! I portion out the puree, freeze it, and then pop the frozen cubes into a freezer bag. This way, I always have single servings ready to go. They usually last for about 3 months in the freezer. When you're ready to serve, just thaw a cube in the fridge overnight or gently warm it up on the stovetop or microwave. Introducing avocado as a first food is generally a great experience because it's mild and rarely causes allergies. Start with just a small spoonful and watch for your baby's cues. Some days they'll eat a lot, some days not so much – and that's totally normal! Once your baby is comfortable with plain avocado, you can start experimenting with combinations. 'Avocado banana baby puree' is a classic for a reason – the sweetness of banana complements the avocado beautifully, and it adds another layer of nutrients. I've also mixed it with sweet potato puree (like the little orange cube you might have spotted in my ice tray!). Other great options include apple, pear, or even a tiny bit of breastmilk or formula mixed in for extra creaminess. Happy feeding!
