Washing New Clothes: A Matter of Brand or Habit?

For me, it depends on where I bought the clothes from. If I picked them up from a thrift store, you can bet I'll be giving them a good wash before wearing them. You never know what kind of dirt or germs might be lurking on second-hand clothes. On the other hand, if I bought them from a high-end retailer, there's a good chance I won't wash them before wearing them.

Of course, this isn't always the case, and there are plenty of exceptions to the rule. But for me, it's all about the source of the clothes. So, do you wash your new clothes before wearing them, or does it depend on the brand?

... Read moreIt's a question I've debated with friends countless times: do you really need to wash new clothes before wearing them? My initial thought, like many, often depends on where I bought them. Thrift store finds? Absolutely, for obvious hygiene reasons! But what about those shiny new items from a department store? It turns out, there's a lot more to consider than just personal preference. Beyond just what feels 'clean,' there are some compelling reasons why giving your new garments a spin in the washer is a smart move. For starters, think about the manufacturing process. Clothes often travel through various factories, handled by many people, and treated with chemicals. These chemicals, like formaldehyde resins used to prevent wrinkles or keep dyes vibrant, can be skin irritants for some. I once got a rash from a new shirt I didn't wash, and that was a lesson learned! Washing helps remove these residues, making the clothing safer and more comfortable against your skin. Then there's the dye factor. Ever bought a brightly colored item and noticed it bled color onto your skin or other clothes? That's excess dye, and it's best to wash it out before it stains your favorite white tee or, worse, your skin. Washing new clothes separately for their first wash, especially dark or vibrant ones, is a golden rule in my laundry routine to avoid any color transfer disasters. And let's not forget the journey from factory to your closet. Clothes are tried on by countless people in stores, packed in warehouses, and shipped across the globe. While not all germs will survive, a quick wash offers peace of mind, especially for items worn close to the body like underwear, t-shirts, or children's clothing. For my little one's clothes, it's a non-negotiable – always wash before the first wear! So, how should you wash them? Generally, a gentle cycle with cold water and a mild detergent is best for the first wash to protect colors and fabrics. Always check the care label, of course! For particularly stubborn odors or to help set colors, some people swear by adding a cup of white vinegar to the wash cycle. It’s a natural softener and odor remover, and I’ve found it really makes a difference with some new fabrics. While my initial habit was often driven by the 'brand,' I've since learned that the health and hygiene benefits of washing new clothes before wearing them usually outweigh the urge to wear them straight out of the bag. It’s a small step that makes a big difference for comfort and peace of mind!

Wash before wearing. I worked in retail years ago those boxes smelled so bad. Some people try on clothes , clothes get dragged on the floor, returned etc
