If you're planning a visit, here are some extra tips and must-dos that I picked up along the way, making my experience so much richer and helping me create my own collection of mental 'POSTCARDS' from this vibrant place. First off, while Tram 28 is a rite of passage, don't underestimate the power of simply walking. Lisbon is a city best explored on foot, even with all its hills! Just make sure to pack your most comfortable shoes. For longer distances, the metro system is incredibly efficient and easy to navigate. Grab a Viva Viagem card, load it up, and you're good to go. It makes MOVING around the city a breeze, letting you get to every nook and cranny. When it comes to food, Lisbon is a paradise beyond just the custard tarts. You absolutely have to try bacalhau (codfish) – it's prepared in countless delicious ways. I stumbled upon a small tasca in Alfama that served the most incredible bacalhau à brás. Beyond the architectural wonders, immerse yourself in the culture. Catching a live Fado show in Alfama was one of the most moving experiences of my trip. The soulful music, often performed in intimate settings, tells stories of saudade (a deep emotional state of melancholic longing) and perfectly captures the spirit of Lisbon. Also, spending an evening wandering through the bustling streets of Bairro Alto as it comes alive with music and chatter is a must. It’s a completely different energy than during the day and feels like the whole city is out socializing. And let's talk day trips! While Lisbon itself offers so much, dedicating a day to Sintra is non-negotiable. The fairytale palaces like Pena Palace and the mystical Quinta da Regaleira are absolutely breathtaking. Just get there early to beat the crowds! Another fantastic option is a half-day trip to Cascais, a charming coastal town easily reachable by train. It’s perfect for a relaxing afternoon by the sea. These short escapes offer a beautiful contrast to the city's energy. Finally, photography opportunities are around every corner. From the colorful tiled buildings to the sweeping views from the miradouros, you'll want to capture everything. I found that just letting myself get lost in the winding alleys often led to the most unexpected and beautiful scenes, perfect for those 'POSTCARDS' you want to send home – or just keep for yourself!
