I haven’t been posting lately because I recently just got married and we went straight to our honeymoon. 🥹❤️ But I am back now and back to doing my nails because it is long overdue. And of course, a review needs to come with it as well.
In the process of looking for wedding nail polishes, I ended up buying from a collection offered by Lights Lacquer and Shape of Water was one of the polishes I bought not for the wedding but because it was just such a gorgeous sheer blue, I had to get it.
I finally got to try it last night and the above pictures were the result with and without the camera flash, and honestly my pictures are an understatement of how gorgeous these nails are in person. At night, when you turn the flash on, the nails pop even more than the pictures I have above. I took a video and I am going to be sharing it on next post. It is just so stunning.
It did take about 3 coats to get the full coverage I have in these pictures, but I think this polish was intended to be more translucent than how I have it on my nails. If you want to have a more jelly-like look you can accomplish that easily with 1-2 coats. But it’s easy to make it patchy and uneven, so you have to be careful with your application and keep the layers thin to have a. uniform blue in all your nails. It is quite impressive though that it covers up the nail really well for being jelly so you can go both ways. It does apply gritty because of the glitter, but if you put a good amount of top coat, it smooths out really nicely!
If you love glitter and you love blue, this might be the perfect summer nail polish for you! 🌊☀️🏖️
... Read moreOkay, so you're dreaming of those mesmerizing blue-green nails that capture the essence of the ocean, right? I totally get it! After falling head over heels for my 'Shape of Water' blue glitter nail polish, I've been experimenting with ways to get that full-on aquatic vibe, especially for summer. While 'Shape of Water' gives a stunning vibrant blue color with incredible sparkle, sometimes you want that true blue-green shift.
One of my favorite ways to achieve a subtle blue-green effect is by thinking about how light plays with color. The 'Shape of Water' polish, with its sheer base and intense glitter, sometimes gives off those amazing deep teal flashes depending on the angle and light. It's truly like looking into clear ocean water! If you have a sheer blue like this, try layering it over a very, very light mint green base. Just one super thin coat of mint green underneath can transform a pure blue into something that leans more aqua or teal without looking muddy. I’ve tried this with a pastel green jelly polish, and the effect was surprisingly gorgeous – almost like a mermaid’s tail!
For a more pronounced blue-green look, ombre is your best friend. Start with a beautiful deep blue like a navy or royal blue at the base of your nail, then gently sponge or blend a vibrant turquoise or emerald green towards the tip. The key is to use a makeup sponge and dab gently to create a seamless gradient. After applying your colors, a good top coat is essential to smooth everything out and give it that glass-like finish. I usually do two thin layers of top coat to really make the transition pop and add extra durability, especially with glitter or multiple layers.
Another trick is to embrace nail art. You don’t have to be a pro! Simple waves or abstract swirls using both blue and green polishes can create that "blue-green nails" effect beautifully. I love using a thin nail art brush to draw delicate wave patterns or even just abstract blobs that blend into each other. If you’re feeling extra, adding a touch of iridescent glitter (maybe a different one from the blue glitter nail polish in 'Shape of Water') over the blue and green sections can really elevate the whole look, making it shimmer like sunlight on water.
Don't forget about different finishes! A matte top coat over a blue-green ombre can give it a really chic, modern twist, almost like sea glass. Or, if you're like me and adore sparkle, find polishes that already have a blue-green duochrome shift. These polishes literally change color depending on the light, giving you that dynamic ocean-inspired look without any extra effort. I'm always on the hunt for these magical polishes!
Finally, remember that the perfect summer nails are all about personal expression. Whether it’s a shimmering blue like 'Shape of Water' or a multi-tonal blue-green masterpiece, make it your own. Experiment with different shades, layering techniques, and glitter placements. The goal is to have fun and feel fabulous, just like you're diving into the coolest, clearest ocean on a hot summer day!
