I learned how to screen-print in art school

2025/9/23 Edited to

... Read moreAs a college student, finding creative outlets that don't break the bank is always a win, and screen printing at home definitely fits the bill! I remember thinking it was super complicated, something only done in professional studios. But after learning the basics, I realized how accessible it is, especially if you're resourceful. It’s not just about making cool shirts; it’s about personalizing your wardrobe, creating unique gifts for friends, or even kicking off a little side hustle on campus. The beauty of DIY screen printing lies in using everyday items. You don't need fancy, expensive equipment to get started. My first screen was literally made from scrap wood I found in a shed and some sheer curtain fabric I bought for a few dollars. The trick is to stretch the fabric as tightly as possible across the wooden frame, stapling it securely. This homemade screen works surprisingly well and is a huge cost-saver compared to pre-made screens. This simple setup proves that the biggest barrier is often just getting started, not the lack of professional tools. Then comes the magic of transferring your design. Instead of a professional exposure unit, I harnessed the power of the sun! You'll need a light-sensitive emulsion, which you can buy online or at art supply stores. Coat your screen evenly with the emulsion and let it dry completely in a dark place. Once dry, print your design onto a transparency film using a black printer – make sure it's dark and opaque. Place this transparency directly onto your emulsion-coated screen, then expose it to direct sunlight. The sun's UV rays harden the emulsion around your design, while the black parts of your design block the light, leaving those areas soft. After exposure, a gentle wash with water removes the unhardened emulsion, revealing your stencil! This method is not only cheap but also incredibly satisfying when you see your design appear. Now for the most exciting part: printing! Lay your fabric item (like a thrifted white t-shirt, which is a fantastic and budget-friendly canvas) flat on a firm surface, placing a piece of cardboard inside to prevent bleed-through. Position your screen carefully over your fabric where you want the design to be. Apply a generous line of screen printing ink (water-based inks are great for beginners as they clean up easily with water) above your design. Using a squeegee, pull the ink firmly and evenly across the stencil in a single, smooth motion. Lift the screen, and there it is – your custom design! I’ve experimented with various patterns, from bold text to playful cartoon characters and even intricate checkered patterns, just like the blue one I made pictured in my photos. Each print feels like a small victory. After printing, let your design air dry completely. To make it permanent and washable, you'll need to 'cure' the ink. For home setups, a regular iron works perfectly. Place a piece of parchment paper or a thin cloth over your dried design and iron it on a medium-high setting for a few minutes, applying even pressure. This heat sets the ink, ensuring your design lasts through countless washes. For future care, washing your screen-printed items inside out in cold water and air-drying them or tumble-drying on low will help preserve the vibrant designs you've so lovingly created. It’s an incredible feeling to wear something you've personally screen-printed, knowing you made it happen on a college budget!
