I’m sorry to myself for every disappointment

Lake Elsinore

... Read moreIt's a heavy feeling, isn't it? That lingering whisper in your mind, 'I'm sorry for being a disappointment.' I've lived with that voice for far too long, and if you're reading this, chances are you have too. There's a particular sting when you feel like you've disappointed yourself, not just others. It's like a constant battle within, where you know you deserve better, but somehow, you keep finding yourself in the same old situations that leave you feeling hurt and inadequate. I often catch myself thinking, 'Dear self, sorry for always putting you in this same situation.' It's a cycle, right? We strive, we hope, we dream, and when things don't go according to plan, or when we fall short of our own impossible standards, the self-blame kicks in. We beat ourselves up, often more harshly than anyone else ever could. And what's the worst part? We end up hurting ourselves, day after day, by holding onto that guilt and regret. I realized, just like the little voice inside me kept saying, that I just want to be loved. And not just loved by others, but by *myself*. It’s a profound realization when you understand that you desire to be treated the way you treat others – with kindness, understanding, and patience. Yet, so often, we reserve that compassion for everyone but ourselves. We give our best to friends, family, colleagues, and then come home to an inner critic who relentlessly points out every perceived flaw and failure. Breaking free from this pattern isn’t easy, but it starts with acknowledging that feeling of 'sorry for being a disappointment' and then choosing to respond differently. For me, it began with writing down a heartfelt letter to myself, an apology for all the times I let myself down, for all the times I didn't protect my own peace or happiness. It wasn’t about wallowing, but about acknowledging the pain and then committing to a new path. One thing that truly helped me was understanding that disappointment is a part of life. It doesn't define my worth. Learning to separate my actions from my identity was crucial. Instead of thinking 'I am a disappointment,' I started to reframe it as 'I experienced a disappointment' or 'I made a choice that led to a disappointing outcome.' This subtle shift created space for self-compassion. So, if you're feeling this way, please know you're not alone. When that voice says, 'You always end up hurting you,' try to counter it with 'WELL HANG ON.' Hang on to the belief that you can learn, grow, and heal. Hang on to the idea that you deserve your own love and forgiveness. Start with small acts of self-kindness. It could be setting a boundary, taking a moment for yourself, or simply speaking to yourself with the same gentle tone you'd use for a dear friend. This journey of self-compassion is a marathon, not a sprint, but every step towards treating yourself with the love you deserve is a victory.
