My own version of chaos gardening! We’re gonna see how all this turns out 👩🏾🌾
Starting a garden in an unconventional space like a sloped backyard has been quite an adventure for me. One important lesson I learned early on is how to choose the flattest area for planting to prevent water runoff issues. Measuring out a 30 by 30-foot square gave me enough room to grow a diverse range of vegetables while still keeping the space manageable. I’ve also realized that wildlife encounters, like snakes or insects with many legs, can be intimidating but are part of the chaotic charm of gardening outdoors. Instead of letting fear stop me, I decided to embrace the experience and learn which creatures are harmless and which ones deserve respect and caution. Another helpful tip is to use landscaping fabric to protect your soil and plants without worrying too much about chemicals leaching into food — it’s a practical compromise for a home garden. Choosing affordable materials from places like Home Depot helps keep costs down while still allowing you to build functional garden beds. Indoor greenhouses are a lifesaver for starting seedlings early, especially for heat-loving plants like eggplant, Scotch bonnet and jalapeno peppers, and sweet bell peppers. Watching my basil, lettuce, cauliflower, beefsteak tomatoes, zucchini, carrots, and broccoli grow from seedlings to mature plants has been incredibly rewarding — even when things don’t go perfectly. One thing I’ve learned is the value of patience and humor in gardening. Not every plant will flourish as expected, and sometimes you have to laugh at the chaos. Sharing your gardening journey honestly, including mistakes and surprises, makes the whole experience more enjoyable and relatable for fellow garden lovers.
