Low porosity hair core

2024/12/12 Edited to

... Read moreHey everyone! If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably spent countless hours wondering why your hair feels perpetually dry, refuses to absorb products, and sometimes even looks dull despite all your efforts. For years, I just couldn't figure out why my hair wasn't thriving. Then, I learned about low porosity hair, and honestly, it was like a lightbulb went off! Understanding my hair's core structure was the first step to truly caring for it. So, what exactly is low porosity hair? Simply put, it means your hair's cuticle layer (the outermost layer) is tightly closed and lays flat. While this sounds good for preventing damage, it actually makes it incredibly difficult for moisture and products to penetrate the hair shaft. Instead of absorbing, things tend to just sit on top, leading to buildup, greasiness, and still feeling dry underneath. For me, this explained why deep conditioners often felt ineffective and why my hair never seemed to truly get hydrated. One of the most frustrating issues I've faced with my low porosity hair is static electricity. Especially in colder, drier months, my hair would literally fly everywhere the moment I touched it or took off a hat! I realized this often happened when my hair was lacking sufficient moisture and certain products were either too heavy or not penetrating properly. Finding the right balance proved crucial. When I first started my low porosity journey, like many, I looked into popular brands. I remember trying OGX shampoos, and for a while, I was really hopeful. The big question in the community often is: 'Is OGX good for low porosity hair?' My personal experience has been a mixed bag. Some OGX lines, particularly those marketed for moisturizing or containing heavy oils and butters, actually made my hair feel coated and even drier over time. They just sat on top! However, I found that lighter formulas, like their Teatree Mint or Apple Cider Vinegar shampoos, could work as clarifying washes to remove buildup periodically. For everyday use, I learned to look for lightweight, humectant-rich shampoos that wouldn't leave a residue. It’s all about trial and error, and truly understanding the ingredients. For my fellow low porosity relaxed hair sisters, it’s a unique balancing act. We want moisture, but without reverting our relaxer or weighing down our hair. Here are a few tips that have been game-changers for me: Warm Water is Your Friend: Always wash your hair with warm water to help gently lift those tight cuticles and allow products to penetrate better. Follow with a cool rinse to seal them back down. Lightweight Products are Key: Avoid heavy butters and oils. Opt for leave-in conditioners and stylers that are water-based and have lighter consistency. Steam Treatments: This has been a lifesaver! Applying a deep conditioner and sitting under a steamer (even a warm towel wrap can help) really helps to open the cuticles and let the goodness sink in. Clarify Regularly: Because products tend to build up, a gentle clarifying shampoo every few weeks is essential to remove residue and allow your hair to breathe. Conquering Static: To combat static electricity, I swear by a good leave-in conditioner applied to damp hair, followed by a lightweight anti-frizz serum. Avoiding over-drying with heat and using silk pillowcases or scarves also makes a huge difference. Navigating low porosity hair can feel overwhelming, but once you understand its unique needs, it becomes much easier. It's a journey of learning what your hair loves and what it doesn't. Don't give up – your hair will thank you for it!
