Part of our normal dog care routine is going to the oncologist about once a month. Some weeks, it feels like every specialist is on speed dial🐾❤️

The same week we were navigating Baby’s corneal ulcer, we also had her routine oncology appointment to check on her cancer, monitor the progress of her front leg, and make sure everything else was staying on track.

Of course, her oncology team immediately noticed her eye and wanted to know everything that had been going on, so we filled them in on the ulcer, the medications, and our treatment plan.

Thankfully, the rest of her appointment brought some encouraging news. 🥹 While Baby has lost a little more weight, her oncologist is simply adjusting her chemotherapy dosage to better match her current size. Overall, they said she’s still stable, her cancer remains well managed, and they’re incredibly happy with how she’s doing.

One thing that always gets me emotional is hearing her specialists talk about her. Every single visit, they’re amazed by her resilience. At 16 years old, with Addison’s disease, heart disease, cancer, and now a corneal ulcer, she continues to show up with the same sweet spirit and determination. They told us how proud they are of her and how remarkable it is that she continues to keep going despite everything she’s been through🥺❤️

As her mom, there are days that feel overwhelming, but moments like this remind me that every medication, every appointment, every sleepless night, and every bit of extra care is worth it. Senior dogs may require a little more from us, but they continue to teach us what strength, resilience, and unconditional love truly look like. 🐶✨

We’re taking things one day at a time, celebrating every good report, and hoping Baby’s eye follows suit. Thank you all for continuing to cheer her on and keep her in your thoughts. She feels every bit of your love, and so do we 🥰🤍

... Read moreManaging a senior dog’s health, especially when dealing with cancer and additional ailments like eye ulcers, requires a comprehensive, compassionate approach. From my own experience with an elderly dog under oncology care, I’ve learned the importance of consistent monitoring and a strong partnership with veterinary specialists. Regular oncology appointments are not simply check-ups but opportunities to tweak treatments such as chemotherapy dosages to reflect changes in the dog’s weight and overall condition. This careful adjustment helps maintain the effectiveness of treatment while minimizing side effects. In some cases, adding new concerns—like a corneal ulcer—means coordinating with different specialists to ensure all health issues are addressed holistically. What stands out most is the incredible resilience senior dogs show despite enduring chronic illnesses. At 16 years old, my dog’s spirit never waned, even with complex diagnoses like Addison’s disease and heart issues alongside cancer. Witnessing their determination fuels a caregiver’s commitment, reminding us that every medication, every extra visit, and each moment of comfort truly matters. Caring for senior dogs also means being attentive to changes in appetite, energy levels, and mobility, which might indicate treatment side effects or progression of illness. Open communication with the oncologist and other specialists enables timely adaptations that can greatly improve quality of life. Lastly, emotional support—for both dog and owner—is crucial. Sharing stories within communities of dog caregivers, such as supportive groups on social media, can bring comfort and practical advice. Celebrating each positive report together creates hope and motivation to cherish every day. If you find yourself navigating similar challenges, know that your dedication reflects profound love and strength. Your senior dog’s endurance and spirit offer daily lessons about courage and unconditional affection that resonate far beyond the veterinary clinic.
