In our family home our bananas go quite quickly, or at least it seems that way. Our family eats almost a banana a day each and which a household of 6 that’s quite a few bunches of bananas. On the rare occasion that our bananas are looking a little rough and my mom has brought home new bananas. I like to take the old ones and freeze whatever is still good! With produce prices the way they are and I’m expecting them to go, I don’t want to waste anything.
Today I made a Banana, Strawberry, Mango, Pineapple Smoothie with Flax Seeds. I don’t always add Flax Seeds because it can create a texture I’m not a fan of if they’re not properly blended. Although if you’re looking for a way to sneak in some extra fiber and nutrients this is a great way to do so!

My family goes through tons of bananas, but even we sometimes end up with a few that are past their prime for snacking. That's why I've become a big fan of freezing fruit, and honestly, it's a game-changer for anyone who loves smoothies or just hates food waste!
Why Freezing Fruit is a Must-Try
For me, it's about two main things: saving money and always having healthy options on hand. Produce prices are always fluctuating, so making sure every piece of fruit gets used is important. Plus, having a stash of frozen fruit means a delicious, nutritious smoothie is just minutes away, without needing to rush to the store.
My Go-To Method for Freezing Different Fruits for Smoothies
Based on my experience, how you freeze fruit can make a difference in your smoothie texture. Here’s how I typically handle some favorites:
Bananas: These are probably the easiest. Once they start getting those brown spots, I peel them, break them into chunks (or slice them), and lay them in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Once they're solid (usually a couple of hours), I transfer the frozen bananas to a freezer-safe bag. This flash-freezing prevents them from clumping together, making them easy to grab for my blender. You might have seen some of my frozen fruit bags, including bananas, in my photos!
Berries (like Strawberries): For strawberries, or any mixed fruit like blueberries or raspberries, I wash them thoroughly and then make sure they're completely dry before freezing. Moisture can lead to ice crystals and freezer burn. Similar to bananas, I spread them out on a baking sheet in a single layer to freeze solid before bagging them. This ensures you get individual frozen fruit pieces, not one giant berry block!
Pineapple & Mango: These tropical delights are fantastic in smoothies. I peel them, remove the core (for pineapple), and chop them into small, smoothie-friendly pieces. Again, the single-layer freeze on a baking sheet is key before transferring them to bags. Having various types of frozen fruit, like mixed fruit, really expands my smoothie options!
Tips for the Best Frozen Fruit Smoothies
Once you’ve got your stash of frozen fruit, making a fantastic smoothie is a breeze. I've found that using frozen fruit often eliminates the need for ice, which can sometimes dilute the flavor of your smoothie. The frozen fruit itself makes the smoothie thick and creamy, much like the delicious blend of strawberries, pineapple, and bananas I often use.
When I'm blending, I usually start with the liquid (water, almond milk, juice – whatever you prefer) at the bottom, then add my frozen fruit. This helps the blender blades get a good start. If you're incorporating denser ingredients or seeds, make sure to blend for an extra moment to get that perfect smooth texture.
Don't Forget the Flax Seeds!
Speaking of boosting nutrients, I often add flax seeds to my smoothies. They're a fantastic source of fiber and omega-3s! As I've learned, you need to make sure your blender is powerful enough and you blend for a good amount of time, as the OCR highlights, especially when adding flax seeds, to avoid a gritty texture. I aim for that perfectly blended, smooth consistency in my blender cup every time. It’s an easy way to sneak in extra goodness without even tasting it!
Freezing fruit has truly transformed my kitchen habits, helping me reduce waste and enjoy healthy, delicious smoothies whenever the craving strikes. I encourage you to try it with your next batch of ripe fruit!
