Wobbly Imperfect Writing

My writing is a wobbly, imperfect mess. This often clashes against the perfectionist in me, the girl who needs to make sure her craft is flawless before it’s published; that every sentence, word, and punctuation is without error. The one who wades through a word document, smoothing the piece until it’s a flat stone, no traces of the ragged edges it once possessed.

My perfectionism isn’t a tool though; it’s the safety blanket I hide under when fear of releasing my work creeps in. When that terror slithers up behind me, whispering like nails on a chalkboard, ‘If you put imperfect things out, others will gossip and judge you, they’ll say things like:’

“Did you see her piece? So ugly, right? Why does she think she can do it?”

“That was horrible. She’s so dumb.”

“She’s weird, so of course she’d think that’s good.”

And on and on I imagine they’ll go, a parade of ants swarming around the vulnerable work I’ve left out. So I keep tinkering with it instead of putting myself out there, falsely believing I can ascend my writing to such a high level of godhood, no one can judge me, mock me, ridicule me.

But I can’t lock up my writing its whole life, it needs the chance to grow on its own. My words deserve to exist as messy and flawed, to exist in an infancy state, wobbling as it finds its footing on the path to becoming what it’s meant to be. It’s okay if it falls, because like a child, it can pick itself up and keep going until it learns to walk on its own.

Because here’s the thing, it doesn’t matter how perfect or disheveled my writing is; judgment is a natural part of visibility. People have opinions about everything, I know I do. So yes, it makes sense people will have thoughts about my work, and yes, sometimes those thoughts aren’t positive. Take the Sistine Chapel, despite its 4.7 rating on Google, some people called it “overrated” and “dull” giving it one star.

Is my writing Sistine Chapel level right now? No. Maybe it could be at some point. But for today, I see myself as a kid again, a persistent little girl riding her bike in a circle until she figures it out, not letting any falls deter her from learning. So hello, here’s my toddler writing in its most wobbly, imperfect form.

... Read moreWriting, like many creative processes, often suffers when perfectionism takes hold. This desire to craft flawless sentences and paragraphs before any sharing is a common but limiting mindset. Perfectionism, as described here, acts as a safety blanket shielding writers from the fears of criticism and negative judgment. These fears often whisper harsh doubts — "Did you see her piece? So ugly, right?" or "She’s dumb," mimicking the disheartening voices many creators imagine from critics. However, an important realization is that imperfection is not only natural but vital to growth. Much like a child learning to walk, writing begins wobbly and unsure but can mature over time through persistence and exposure. Keeping writing locked away for fear of judgment denies it the chance to evolve and connect with readers. Instead, vulnerability to criticism can be empowering — enabling a writer to improve and find authentic expression. Judgment, though often feared, is indeed an inevitable part of visibility. Everyone, including the writer themselves, holds opinions. Some may be negative, as even celebrated works like the Sistine Chapel face harsh critiques despite stellar reputations. This suggests that perfection is subjective and external opinions variable. By allowing oneself to accept "toddler writing" — early drafts that are imperfect and rough — writers experience freedom that fuels creativity. This process nurtures resilience, teaches humility, and honors the true journey of writing. Fear should not prevent work from being shared; embracing imperfection leads to connection and growth. In summary, battling the inner critic that fears gossip and judgment requires mindset shifts and self-compassion. Writing that embraces its flaws can evolve beyond initial wobbles into powerful narratives. This approach encourages writers to publish with courage and learn through each bold attempt, transforming perfectionism from a barrier into a stepping stone for mastery.
